Rich, decently fruity if a little tight and brooding in cast despite its medium-intensity, this wine smells of black cherries, caramel and touches of sweet loam, and its nicely focused flavors offer both depth and richness that overreach the tightening tannins looming in the background. There is a ripe, robust quality about the wine even now, but it will show itself more fully with bottle age and will also pick up some very useful softening and polish if held for three to six years more. *Two Stars* (8/2005)
Notably smooth and creamy, with a broad range of lively mocha, espresso, currant, dried berry, tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, intense and persistent on the finish, where the tannins flex their strength. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.—2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2016. 392 cases made. (Web Only-2011, JL)
