1999 Thierry Darrimajou "Domaine du Berdet" 17 Year Old K&L Exclusive Armagnac (750ml)

SKU #1303561

The wonderful estate of Thierry Darrimajou, located in the town of Bourdalat is one of the highest quality operations we've ever come across in Armagnac. The devotion to quality extends beyond the vineyards -40 beautiful hectares planted to Ugni, Colombard, and Baco, although the armagnacs are 100% Baco- and into the cellars where the Darrimajous focus on working the brandies hard through aeration, careful manipulation their brandies to make sure their as elegant and open as possible. Thierry believes the aeration of the brandy is crucial to their ultimate quality particularly because they're aged exclusively in new oak casks. The additional tannins add to the already high ester eau-de-vie and oxygen reacts with these elements to soften and draw the supple fruity elegance of the Armagnac out. The Darrimjaou's are in the process of moving all their casks to a new warehouse, which still includes open earth floors and a humidity control system of Thierry's own design. This will allow them to make sure that the new warehouse retains the precise environmental specifications of their old fashioned wooden warehouses. The domaine is natural and they never use any sugar or color in the creation of their Armagnac, although they do reduce in barrel gradually rather than cut the product prior to bottling. This softens the eau-de-vie without compromising body. A wonderful confluence of tradition and innovation producing one of the most easy to appreciate Armagnacs on the shelf.

I'm totally in love with this gorgeous vintage from the new Domaine du Berdet. Like all Thierry's armagnacs this is distilled from 100% baco, but it's not as soft and supple as the 1995. Instead expect bigger notes of fresh oak spice, fresh earth, dried fruit, exotic wood and a sweet burnt sugar finish. This one might for the bourbon drinkers thanks to the notes of vanilla, varnish, caramel and sweet fruit. The long spicy finish is drier than the 1999 and really highlights the vanilla extract notes from the nose. Another rockin' price as well.

Additional Information:

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
