2016 Clos de Boüard, Montagne St-Emilion (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1301880 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Clos de Bouärd is the Montagne Saint-Emilion property owned by Coralie de Boüard and her husband, Loïc Maillet, Coralie already with winemaking experience under her belt having run La Fleur de Boüard in Lalande-de-Pomerol. It was previously known as "Tour Musset" and owned by Castel. It has a pretty bouquet with tightly wound minerally scents with touches of licorice filtering through with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, crisp acidity, quite linear and taut in style with pencil lead and tobacco notes lending complexity towards the classically styled finish. I appreciate both the freshness and the cerebral nature of this 2016, one that will age with style. (NM) (4/2017)

Formerly Chateau Tour Musset, acquired by the de Boüard family of Chateau Angelus, and rechristened Clos du Boüard for the inaugural vintage of 2016. The estate consists of 30 hectares of vines in Montagne Saint-Emilion on clay-limestone soils, and lies near the border with Saint-Emilion near the commune of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. The 2016 is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet and ripe. Very polished with fine tannins.

This new venture from the folks at Chateau Angelus would put many Grand Cru Saint-Emilions to shame. This dark wine is rich and sweet with cocoa, black raspberry and dark cherry fruit and a powerful tannic strike on the finish. Lots of bang for the buck here.

The first vintage for Coralie de Bouard and it is a big success. 85%M,10%CF, 5% CS and 100% satisfying on the palate. So sweet and sexy with lovely texture. Perfumy aromas of black cherry-great acidity on the palate. Try this.

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
