The Bacanora from Rancho Tepua is second to none in the mezcal world. Roberto and Lupita Contreras Mayoral own the small Rancho Tepua near Aconchi deep in the Sierra Madre Occidental. The semi-arrid high desert mountain range is home to some very special agave spirits that were banned from production for almost 80 years. Here, as they always have, they cultivate agave and distill an exceptional mezcal. Bacanora itself has a bad name, partly for it's reputation as the moonshine of the desert, but also because a number of poor quality products have been available throughout Mexico for sometime since the prohibition ended. Tepua is a stark contrast to those stereotypes. The small Agave Pacifica is planted here and grows wild with the aid of local bat populations to help pollinate the fast growing quixotes when they bloom. The estate grown agave is cooked in a brick lined pit for 36 hours over mesquite. Once shredded, natural fermentation takes about 10 days using stainless steel vats before being ready to distill. Only local springwater, they distills the wash on two stainless steel pots lined with copper tubing and condensers, which Roberto built himself. The result is a fabulous unique expression of the agave, the high desert terroir and the wonderful Rancho itself. In the perfect spot style-wise between the funkiest mezcal and the very best agave driven tequila. For the amount of effort that goes into this special product we're very lucky to get it at such a wonderful price.

It should have come as no surprise to me that all over Mexico people have been distilling the agave to make spirits, just because tequila and now mezcal are the best known here does not mean other forms of mescal don't exist. This however was my first time trying another form of this most delightful spirit and I almost did a happy dance. This is everything I like about good tequila and mezcal, wild bold tropical fruit notes in the nose are balanced by a touch of smoke and a little earthiness. Then you have big almost waxy fruit on the palate with a heat and spice that build but never overwhelm. There is some smoke here (as there should be) and the finish is absolutely stunning. Summertime sipping here I come!!

This is the first Bacanora that I have tasted and it is a wonderful addition to K&L's selection of Agave-based spirits. There is nose of citrus with a subtle and light hint of smoke. In the mouth it is soft and almost creamy with citrus, baking spices and a hint of pepper. There is a nice long finish. I think that people who like Tequila and Mezcal will enjoy this product.

It seems everyday I get more interested in agave spirits. Long gone is my loathing of that terrible tequila experience early in my drinking career that so many of us are familiar with; I've embraced the agave distillates wholeheartedly. Nearly every region of Mexico makes its own agave spirit, with its own classification, character, and protected name. Tequila and mezcal just happen to be the most well known (regionally specific to Jalisco and Oaxaca, respectively). Thanks to David's nuanced selections, I'm finding that there are an extraordinary number of agave spirits that demonstrate a finesse and subtlety entirely lacking in the most well known tequila brands. This bacanora (one of the agave spirits of Sonora, Mexico) has finesse in spades. The nose is an interplay of citrus, earth, yerba buena, and savory woody herbs. The palate is a mix of sweet tea, baking spices, pure agave, lemon peel, and most notably, is ultra-smooth and rich. The finish is equally impressive: it's long, clean, and subtle. Not so much smoky as earthy. Bravo!
