2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey St. Aubin "Le Banc"

SKU #1300268 Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Smoky white orchard fruit aromas, and in particular pear, combine with floral and citrus zest precede the very round and rich flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel while offering a slightly drier and more complex finale. Once again, this should be approachable on the early side. Drink: 2019+ Inner quote mark (6/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2015 Saint Aubin le Banc has a clean and precise nose of red apples and apricot blossom, a touch of lemongrass in the background, all with impressive intensity. The palate is well balanced with a touch of peach skin on the entry, smooth in texture with a lovely nectarine and orange rind finish. I have a lot of respect for this village cru and this comes recommended. (NM) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

K&L Notes

After working as the winemaker at his father's domaine, Pierre-Yves Colin began his own in 2005 to much acclaim. As Neal Martin expounds in the Wine Advocate, "Pierre-Yves’s wines have become highly sought-after in recent vintages and in many ways it is a totem of Burgundy’s move towards more micro-négoçiant set-ups. Where once the mantra was that you have to own your own vines, nowadays wines such as Pierre-Yves debunk that theory, which is good news because the salient fact is that some of the most talented winemakers can no longer afford the escalating land prices. One other piece of good news of PYCM lovers is that he has expanded his range with some fermage agreements courtesy of his aunt... It is interesting to muse upon the fact that both Pierre-Yves and his brothers Damien and Joseph at Domaine Marc Colin, are producing some of the best wines in Côte de Beaune. I never asked how competitive they are, but that drive towards quality is a blessing to all us wine-lovers." (12/2014)

A wine that showcases the talents of perhaps the region's most popular winemaker (the descendent of the aforementioned Marc Colin). Pierre-Yves has become renowned for his snappy and focused flavors, choosing not to stir up the lees for added richness so as to let the terroir's true character shine through. The "Le Banc" has a bit more oak, but it's still carrying that limey and lemony acidity right to the finish; there's almost a mineral residue on your palate minutes later. Again, you'll pay double for Colin's Montrachet expressions, but you won't necessarily get more out of them. Considering Pierre-Yves's hipster street cred, I'm surprised the wine wasn't more expensive.
