2016 Dos Minas Torrontes Cafayate

SKU #1299430

As Sauvignon Blanc is to New Zealand, Torrontes is to Argentina. This fun, kicky label is no mass-market brand. It's a very small production project from the northern Cafayate region, ideal for growing crisp white wines like this. Importer Michael Skurnik tells the story: "The dos minas ("two chicks" in Argentine slang) of the name are Lucía Romero, who runs Bodega El Porvenir de los Andes in Cafayate, Argentina, and Heather Willens, who came to Buenos Aires via California and has experience working with small wineries in Argentina. Both are champions of wines from the mystical desert landscapes of Cafayate, and both believe that Torrontés is a wonderfully aromatic, food-friendly wine that is among the best of what Argentina has to offer to the world. So they decided to come together to create this small project to showcase the rugged, high altitude Malbec and the elegant, balanced Torrontés that the best producers in Cafayate are capable of making."

Perhaps there is no other wine that will pair as fantastically with Seviche (or crabcakes really...) as this Torrontes from Dos Minas. Its aromatics are perfumed with intense white flowers, honey and bright citrous, but with its dry finish and high acidity, it achieves a perfect balance. Very nice wine indeed.

Just because my friend Heather Willen's is one of the two "Minas" behind this project doesn't mean I'm going to go easy on the wine. But in this case, it is perfectly justifiable. The "Dos Minas" represents one of the best most correct versions of Torrontes I have tasted in some time. Capturing the essence of the grape and it aromas of jasmine, ginger and apples while maintaining crispness is no mean feat. This is terrific for lovers of aromatic whites, especially if you get a little tired by softer versions. Great with things like cured salmon, salads of mixed greens and stone fruit or with some salty or creamy cheeses. Now my aperitif white for warm weathered days.

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
