2016 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $85)

SKU #1299374 97 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A stunning red with currants, blackberries, roses and violets. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and polish and finesse to the powerful tannins. A real stunner. Better than 2015. Take a serious look at it, beginning 2024. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

96 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark It’s a total rock star of a wine and has fabulous notes of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, and sandalwood that build beautifully with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, layered, and seamless, it’s incredibly impressive and I’d wager up with the finest vintages ever from this estate. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 20-25. Bravo! Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Malescot St. Exupery sings of cassis, fragrant earth, tobacco and lilacs with a compelling waft of mocha. Medium to full-bodied and strutting loads of expressive fruit layers at this youthful stage, it's framed by ripe, grainy tannins and oodles freshness, finishing with great length and depth. (LPB) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry is fabulous. Powerful and explosive on the palate, the 2016 offers serious intensity, but it also appears to be holding back quite a bit of its potential. Moreover, what impresses me most is that in 2016, intensity is delivered more with finesse than with the brutish power that is such a signature of Malescot. Deep and resonant, but also remarkably polished, the 2016 Malescot is a winner. Hints of iron, smoke, cedar, tobacco and scorched earth add nuance, but it is the wine's sense of poise that is most remarkable. I loved it. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark This has forward oak edging and attractively smoky fireside notes of ash and grilled sarments. The tannins are monolithic at this stage, and there's a lot to be impressed about in this wine, although it has closed down pretty severely, emphasising austerity rather than seduction. There's no question that all the elements for ageing are present and correct - it's a confident expression of the vintage and one with huge potential. Matured in 70% new oak. (JA) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This opens slowly, showing a slight woodsy bent, with alder and mesquite notes leading off, but as it does the core of red currant, blackberry and plum fruit flavor fleshes out nicely, soaking up the woodsy element while adding in light savory detail and black tea and violet notes. A long mineral echo chimes through the finish. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2019)

K&L Notes

95 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry has a well-defined bouquet of ample red currant, cranberry and strawberry fruit laced with rose petal and hints of graphite. There is something almost Saint Julien-like about the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, graphite-infused black fruit, and quite linear and poised, but it conveys a genuine sense of energy and tension toward the classic finish. A magnificent Margaux." (01/2019)

There is nothing better than a wine that houses two seemingly opposite characteristics under the same cork. In the case of Malescot, it’s all about poise and power (the hallmark of GREAT Bordeaux). Malescot has fast become one of my favorite properties in Margaux, with the 2016 offering even furthering the case. Whether a Bordeaux neophyte or devotee, you are going to love this wine! Wonderful layers of ripe blue and red fruits are offset by savory complexity and long, refreshing mineral tones. You will be hard pressed to find a more palate-pleasing wine at this price anywhere in the world.

This is full, rich, and almost extravagant but held in check by the integration of powerful structure, wonderful proportion, and a finish of fine, ripe tannin. From an appellation that was a roaring success in 2016, this is a relative bargain.

The 2015 was a 3-Star beauty, and the 2016 is again a fabulous 3-Star wine. Perfectly extracted, ripe grapes and great tasting, fine balance, tannins, and long finish. 3 Stars and also by FAR the greatest value for great Margaux wine.

Another standout with fantastic berry fruit, baker’s chocolate, and super-silky tannins with that unmistakable Margaux feel. This was the biggest seller we had for the 2015 Bordeaux offering. This wine is vying with it for the crown of best in store. Bright and lively. So lush and ripe. Jean-Luc Zuger has fashioned another top wine for 2016. This wine is a bit more precise than the 2015.
