2016 La Dame de Montrose, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1299224 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2016 Dame de Montrose is also gorgeous, and the second wines of Bordeaux continue to gain in quality. A blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new oak, this beauty has impressive amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, violets, and damp earth that give way to a medium to full-bodied, layered, pure, and seamless beauty that has real class. It’s well worth seeking out and will hopefully help you to keep your hands off the grand vin for at least a few years. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark Extremely perfumed and beautiful with bright, violet and plum aromas. Full to medium body, very fine and firm tannins and transparent fruit. Linear and refined with a very long finish. Second wine of Château Montrose. Try in 2022. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A gorgeous second wine, the 2016 La Dame de Montrose is incredibly expressive today. Supple, radiant and inviting, La Dame has all the potential to be an overachiever in this vintage. Today, it is quite open, and, even more importantly, flat-out delicious. In some moments, La Dame is rather nuanced, while at other times it is a bit more potent. It will be interesting to see what aging in bottle brings, but one thing is certain; the 2016 La Dame is a stellar wine. Don't miss it. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

92 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A little subdued right now but the fresh, floral edging of the grand vin is also clear here, balanced by juicy black fruit flavours and a similar sense of restraint. The blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc represents 42% of the estate's production. (JA) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Tannins are very present in this dense wine. But so are vibrant, crisp black-currant flavors and acidity. The combination of tannins and fresh acidity will drive this second wine of Château Montrose forward. Drink from 2023. (RV) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 La Dame de Montrose is deep garnet-purple colored and gives up cassis, earth, tilled soil, truffles and chocolate-covered cherries on the nose. Medium-bodied, the palate is firm, elegant and restrained with a mineral finish. (LPB) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark This has absorbed all the Petit Verdot in 2016. Exceptionally deep blackish crimson. Not especially expressive on the nose but really deep and intense on the palate. Very dense for a second wine but with a good raciness and energy. Rather elegant and flattering without resorting to sweetness. Quite cool on the end. Lighter and less dense than the grand vin. Drink 2024-2039. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

K&L Notes

92 points Neal Martin in Vinous: "The 2016 La Dame de Montrose has a lovely bouquet of blackberry, tobacco, light black truffle notes and a touch of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite sturdy for a second wine, and lightly spiced with a sprinkling of white pepper on the surprisingly persistent finish. Excellent." (1/2019)

Fresh boutiques of Violets on the nose. Full body and very structured. Vibrant Black currant, dense tannins, bright acidity and superb long finish. This is one of the most outstanding wines you will ever taste.

A classic "second" wine made for pure enjoyment right now. It is soft, approachable, with loads of exotic spices, and a very inviting aromatics. A Saint-Estèphe through and through.

This is a great second wine. Mostly Merlot in the blend-black fruit aromas, full-bodies but balanced perfectly. Great depth and length.
