2017 Haut-Batailley, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1299207 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Haut-Batailley is powerful, dark and racy. Dark cherry, gravel, smoke, menthol, licorice and spice all pulse with notable energy and tons of Cabernet Sauvignon savoriness. For such a big wine, Haut-Batailley has quite a bit of nuance, but it is the sense of vibrancy here that is compelling. (AG) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Château Haut-Batailley checks in as 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot, aged in 60% new barrels. This smoking wine has loads of blackcurrant, black cherry, unsmoked tobacco, new leather, and spice-driven aromas, with just a hint of chocolatey oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, with beautiful elegance, it shows the classic style of the vintage and will evolve for 20-25 years. 93+ Inner quote mark (2/2020)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Lovely perfumes and currants with graphite and light herbs. Medium to full body. Creamy tannins. Soft and elegant and creamy at the end. Finesse. A blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon and 34% merlot. Drink in 2022. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A little closed on the nose still, but there is excellent quality damson and cassis fruit hidden in there. Grilled caramel notes, subdued for now alongside black chocolate and liquorice which are knitted together. The vintage comes through in a slightly soft finish, but this has charm, confidence and poise. (JA) Inner quote mark (11/2019)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Haut Batailley sings of baked blackberries, black cherry compote and warm cassis with hints of fungi and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruit flavors and loads of earthy accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing savory. (LPB) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark The bitter plum, dark cherry and red currant fruit flavors are well-melded, carried by a racy iron streak through a finish gilded with floral and sanguine notes. Fresh and defined from start to finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Spicy, moreish Cabernet fruit, the tannins firm but already smooth. Dark and spicy on the nose, relatively closed at the moment but the sample is cool. Really fine texture, so elegant. Beautifully fresh and juicy, sustained too and dark-fruited on the finish. Fine balance and fruit intensity. 17/20 points (JH) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

K&L Notes

92 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2017 Haut-Batailley was cropped at 50hl/ha according to Jean-Charles Cazes since they escaped frost damage. It is the first vintage that the Cazes family have full responsibility for (incidentally, the 2016 remains unsold at time of writing). Matured for 18 months in 60% new oak, it has developed nicely since I last tasted it: blackberry, bilberry, graphite and mint aromas stride out of the glass, veins of blue fruit emerging after a couple of minutes of aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite cohesive and dense with good grip towards the finish. There is suppleness here, but there is backbone too. Good potential." (02/2020)

First year under the ownership of the Cazes family of Lynch bages fame.34%M, 66%CS –quite high in Cabernet this year. Very good effort here with tons of red rose aromas and flavors. Some tannin on the back end. Look for this property to improve steadily under the Cazes regime.
Drink from 2021 to 2031
