2014 Quinta do Romeu "Moinho do Gato" Douro

SKU #1298621

Located in the drier Douro Superior, Quinta do Romeu is a family owned quinta that grows organically cultivated grapes and olives. Their wines are intense yet graceful; while they are certainly full of fruit they do not have quite the high impact in terms of extract and oak that perhaps define some others who are working hard to continue to put Portuguese red wines on the map. While 2012 was a very warm, dry vintage (even in the Douro where they are used to warm and dry), Quinta do Romeu managed to produce this lovely, brightly fruited red. It's a great example of the value available in the Douro region. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese wine buyer)

Other Red Wines

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
