2001 Auchroisk 15 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1298477

Most people still picture sherry matured malts when they think of the Speyside district (formerly known as Glenlivet until that got too confusing), but the region's bread and butter is still the soft, fruity, charming, malt-driven style you'll find inside this bottle of Auchroisk 15 year old. Part of the Johnnie Walker empire, we occasionally see Auchroisk here in the states as a Diageo limited edition release, but rarely as a consistently-bottled single malt expression. This particular specimen is like a fresh blast of summer with a huge dose of peaches and apricots on the nose that continue to emanate from the bottle once it's been opened. The palate is seductively sweet, but also light on its feet, with flavors of stonefruit, maple syrup, and bit of compote on the finish, before it turns malty once again and beckons another taste. Bottled at 54.5%, you'd never know this whisky was running at full proof. It's as relaxing and airy as a summer breeze, making this the perfect dram for your backyard barbeques and July campfire evenings.

I don't think I can recall a cask strength single malt as delicious and downright drinkable as the Auchroisk 15. It makes me thirsty thinking about tasting this yesterday, and now that I recall I think I momentarily broke with the professional convention of spitting; the whiskey tasted really good and I did not want to spit. I think I remember Driscoll describing this as ideal for the warmer weather, and I would absolutely agree with that. Light on its feet, subtle, harmonious, one that I will be drinking for sure.

This cask of Auchroisk is expressive and bold, but also nearly 100% malt driven. A stupendously complex nose that's hard to pin down, but shows awesome quincy and lemon notes. Behind that a savory quality almost like a fresh shiso leaf torn right into the glass. The herbal quality dissipates on the palate and instead the yellow orchard fruits take over. The finish is sweet malt. This is a drinkers whisky and likely will be a sleeper, but it's a splendid expression of this lovely distillery and should not be ignored.

I love getting a surprise when I taste single malt, like getting to taste a whisky from a distillery I am unfamiliar with and find out that it is delicious. Case in point, this delightful little 15 year old from Auchroisk. The nose gave me an almost overwhelming bouquet of vanilla pudding, tropical flowers, and a hint of licorice. With that I was prepared for a big, bombastic scotch, instead I found a beautifully elegant whisky with long notes of green apple, young melon, and a subtle core of smoke running through it. There is very little heat on the finish, rather it is soft with just a little spice and a whole lot of yummy.

The aromas of this single cask of Auchroisk are expressive and inviting with wax and honey notes. It is one of the prettiest that I have smelled in a long time. In the mouth it is not big and heavy but balanced and light to medium bodied, and offers nice malt flavors that are on the dry side with what seemed to me to a hing of savory notes. I think that this is both very interesting and very good.

Wow is this a fresh and fruity whisky! I had to rinse my glass out after tasting this one, thinking that maybe some of the residue from the peach brandy I'd been drinking before had unfairly influenced this crackin' edition of Auchroisk, but it was not the case! Smell the bottle after you open it; it's oozing with aromas of summer stonefruit and peach pie. The light and surprisingly sweet palate continues from there, lithe and lean, but never dull or lacking in any way. This is a rare breed of whisky in today's market. It reminds me of some of the better Bladnoch bottles of the past with a vivacity and pure fruitedness that gets lost in blended editions.
