1989 Port Dundas 28 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Grain Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1298476

While it's definitely fun to find a single barrel of cask strength Scottish grain whisky that tastes like Bourbon with big woody notes and lots of spice, weI like to mix it up every now and then here at K&L. Sometimes we want grain whisky with smooth, vanilla-laden, grainy, sweetness - the character that makes Johnnie Blue drinkers say: "Man, is that smooth." If you bought a bottle of our recent North British 28 year, you'll probably recognize that style of whisky as the former. This Port Dundas 28 year is definitely the latter. It's light in color, but deceptively rich on the palate. It's sweet like sugar and candy are sweet, but then the marzipan, almond notes, and oily grains come out to play and the whole thing mellows into a soft and oaky finish. At 50.5%, one wouldn't necessarily call it an "easy" whisky, but considering the 101 proof it glides over the palate like pure silk. Hardcore grain whisky fans will want to pour this over the rocks immediately, or - better yet - add soda for one decadent Highball cocktail. Super whisky nerds will want it purely as a blending component for home experiments.

The lite pretty soft color of this grain whiskey sets the tone for this product. Both the aromas and flavors are light and on the delicate side, but there are a lot of flavors that are easy and round with a kiss of sweetness.I am glad that this cask did not end up as part of a blend because it is so nice and tasty on its own.

Glasgow's Port Dundas distillery isn't a household name, but of course grain whisky isn't a household staple at this point. Tasting this 28-year-old cask edition, I have to think my friend John Glaser of Compass Box fame would go nuts for this whisky. It reminds me of the same type of grains he's used for his Double Single and single grain editions previously with that sweet, buttery, smooth-sailing profile and soft, luxurious texture. If you've enjoyed any of those grain-focused whiskies yourself, I think you'll be thrilled by both the flavor profile of this Port Dundas and the price.

Who says grain whisky isn't for connoisseurs? The aromatics on this long-aged grain whisky from Port Dundas are surprisingly delicate and fruit-oriented, with added notes of exotic spice and very subtle creme brulée from the oak. No need for ice or water here. Despite a 50% abv, it goes down as smooth as any 40% abv blend, with a more complex flavor profile. A no-brainer for the price.
