2015 Wine & Soul "Guru" White Douro

SKU #1295686 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Guru is a roughly equal blend of Códega do Larinho, Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio, aged for five months in French oak (30% new, the rest second-year wood). The nose is filled with woody nuances and a touch of smoke--more dry and serious than vanilla, though. It has fine but subtle concentration, showing surprisingly good flavor dribbling over the palate. Once past the nose, in fact, this begins to sing rather pretty songs. As it warms and airs out, underlying freshness comes out and cuts through both the oak and the increasingly minor hints of smoke. I was startled to see, about an hour later at 62 degrees Fahrenheit, that it had some hints of purity, relatively speaking. The tension on the finish was lovely and there was some tannic pop, too. Its power and oak do mean that it should be part of a food pairing, not a sipping wine. It will be interesting to see how this comes along in the cellar. It may well be the best Guru in some time and it should hold rather well. I am leaning up just now; it needs to do a better job of pulling in some wood over the next year. I think it will. It might even deserve an uptick. (MS) (4/2017)

K&L Notes

Sandra Tavares of Wine & Soul is a Portuguese superstar, with plenty of mentions in the press, including Wine Spectator and a winemaker of the year award in one of Portugal's premier wine magazines. This Douro white is a single vineyard blend of Viosinho, Codega do larinho, Rabigato and Gouveio . With its bright, golden fruit flavors, including some starfruit notes, and well balanced oak, this reminds me of very good Pessac (perhaps SHL with a lot less oak...and a much lower price!) Delicious, fantastic white that shows Portugal's potential to produce some of the world's best whites.

Aromas reminiscent of a fine white Bordeaux. Stone fruit, citrus zest, and lemon meringue followed by a bouquet of pound cake, and crushed rocks. Powerful and elegant. The palate possesses both weight and a pleasant elevated acidity. A rocky minerality on the finish. This wine is drinking great now, and will for at least the next 10 years. Enjoy with a wide array of food offerings, especially with seafood or white meat. One of the most underrated white wines in our store

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
