2010 Château Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

SKU #1294693 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a little mute at this stage, offering up glimpses of crushed blackberry, red plums and wild blueberries notes with touches of pencil shavings, dried Mediterranean herbs and forest floor. Medium-bodied, it has a velvety backbone and mouth-filling red and blue fruits, finishing long and earthy. (LPB) Inner quote mark (2/2018)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is immediate, juicy and expressive in this vintage. At the same time, it seems pretty clear that the 2010 needs at least a few more years in bottle. Today, it is a bit disjointed as it is neither primary, nor showing too many tertiary notes or complexity. Sweet tobacco, leather, licorice, menthol and spices emerge over time, but the 2010 is a wine built for the cellar. There is plenty of density, but it needs time to emerge. (AG) Inner quote mark (11/2013)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Extremely attractive aromas of asphalt, blueberry and rose petal. Full body with very well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. Montelena estate shows a refinement and balance one expects in traditional Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Inner quote mark (5/2014)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This red combines a sleek, rich core of dark berry, black licorice, roasted coffee and cedar flavors with a black licorice underpinning. The texture is firm, but the tannins have a fleshy side, with a long, clean finish. (JL) Inner quote mark (7/2014)

K&L Notes

95 points, Stephen Tanzer in Vinous: "Bright red-ruby. Exceptional aromatic purity and complexity to the aromas of blueberry, cassis, cocoa powder, mocha, spices and minerals; some very ripe berry pie notes emerged with air. Wonderfully creamy, silky and deep; an utterly seamless wine with the underlying soil-driven minerality to energize and frame its fleshy flavors of dark fruits and spices. This is yet another 2010 whose impression of refinement belies the weather extremes of the growing season. Finishes with building but perfectly integrated tannins and outstanding length." (05/2020)

The 2010 vintage may not have been as talked up as the more forward 2007, but this wine comes on like a more subdued version of 2007: a savory, sage aroma with a dusty, gravelly background opens up to a medley of brown baking spices and sweet fruit, finally, revealing itself on the palate. Clean, old school Cab! Tasted from 1.5L, January, 2018.
