Kavalan Solist "Moscatel" Cask Strength Single Barrel Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Previously $500)

SKU #1294529 93 points Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Rich and intense nose, with paradise cake, honey, dried apple, plum, and crème d’abricot. The mouthfeel is dry, nutty, and fruity, with a silky consistency. The cask strength is more noticeable here, but as it dissipates, there is some late complexity of plum skin and coffee bean with wave after effortless wave of flavor lasting for minutes on end. Finish is hot and nutty, with moist coffee grains. (JM) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

There is some undeniable magic about a Kavalan single barrel that's apparent from the instant you pour it into the glass. The color, aromas and texture seem unnaturally dense and saturated. And the flavor? Consistently incredible. The moscatel finish here lends less of the bright apricot and intensely floral character than I originally expected, instead delivering dark, brooding sherry notes- spent yeast and walnuts, cocoa nibs and grape must. That is not to say it is lacking in fruit by any means. A panoply of dried and stewed fruits leaps from the glass; plum, fig, peach, and even a hint of apricot dance nimbly across the palate. And its luscious texture proves difficult to describe. At once incredibly dense and syrupy while also feeling fresh and juicy, it defies categorization and boggles the mind. Perhaps it's due to some brilliant arrangement of component pieces. Though the flavors are full and intense, the whisky contains decent enough acid to balance that intensity. A strong core of incredibly savory malt provides the perfect foundation for all those wild and dynamic flavors and aromas, allowing everything to stand together in blissful harmony. Do yourself a favor and grab this before it sells out. We might not see a deal like this again until next year.

The recent release of single casks from the King Car Distillery are without a doubt some of the most special bottlings that have ever come to market. The Moscatel is easily the most approachable and decadent of the new special single casks from Kavalan. I was worried we'd get too much floral, perfumed quality out of this cask, but instead, I find a host of outrageous dried and fresh fruit flavors condensed into one of the most precise and delineated deliveries I've ever seen. Expect an intensly concentrated orchard of of figs, plums, guavas, and peaches on your palate. No wonder this whisky won double gold at the SF World Spirits Competition.
