2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

SKU #1294453 96 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Dusty cherry, currant and leafy underbrush notes are the highlights of this tightly wound red, which is not giving much today, yet there is a center of sweet berry fruit. Fine, resonant and fresh aftertaste, with refined tannins. (BS) Inner quote mark (9/2017)

Outer quote mark The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an elegant red berry bouquet that could disarm you at a hundred paces. This has so much finesse and detail. The palate is taut and crisp, bright, almost lucid red cherry fruit laced with orange zest, leading to a very refined and sustained finish. This is a lovely wine -- sensual yet understated. Outer quote mark The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin from Domaine Rousseau may compete favorably with the 2005 and 2010 versions here, which remain the single finest young vintages of this bottling I have ever tasted from the domaine. The 2014 is a stunning young example, delivering a superb constellation of sappy black cherries, plums, fraises du bois, mustard seed, espresso, beautiful soil tones and just a touch of cedar in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and of course, sappy at the core (this is a 2014 Rousseau wine after all!), with exceptional focus and grip, lovely complexity, ripe tannins and outstanding length and grip on the tangy and very, very soil-driven finish. A brilliant bottle of Charmes. (Drink between 2025-2075) Inner quote mark (12/2016)

Outer quote mark Elegant and attractively perfumed aromas speak of red cherry, rose petal, spice and sandalwood nuances. The detailed and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek, even silky mouth feel before culminating in a lingering and ever-so-mildly austere finale. This well-balanced and understated effort is really quite lovely and should drink reasonably well after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age yet repay a dozen plus. Inner quote mark (1/2017)

90-92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright medium red. Brambly aromas of redcurrant, minerals and dried flowers. Tighter in the mouth than the premier crus here, showing less charm and early sweetness but noteworthy intensity and a firm shape. More minerals, dried flowers and earth than primary fruit. Charmes is never an opulent wine here, noted Rousseau, who pulled up some of his "tired old vines" after the 2011 harvest for replanting. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry. Not at all a feminine style of Charmes, no doubt owing to the high percentage of Mazoyères fruit. (ST) Inner quote mark (1/2016)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Unusually intense with strong cherry fruit and a great line of pure very ripe fruit. Very gourmand! Long. 17.5/20 points (JR) Inner quote mark (11/2015)

K&L Notes

91pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Medium deep colour, with noticeably paler rim, a touch of reduction, possibly stems too. Sweet crushed strawberry fruit, a touch of dilution, agreeable and with some length but not threatening the leaders. Finishes on sweet fruit though odd reductive notes remain. Tasted: September 2017."
