1986 Domaine Boingnères Folle Blanche Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

SKU #1293524

When discussing the components of a great brandy, the soil is just as important an indicator of quality as it is to a great wine. Boingnères grows all their fruit in a majority of sand and limestore--the absolute best makeup for producing fantastic grapes. Run by Martòn Lafite, of the esteemed Château Lafite family, the Domaine also owns their own still (rather than hiring someone to bring them a still like many producers do) so they have been familiar with the workings of their distillation for decades. The single vintage Folle Blanche expression uses only stocks from Lafite's rarest varietal distillate, highlighting the floral, aromatic, and spicier notes from the finer spectrum of Armagnac flavor. Those in search of supreme complexity will be hard-pressed to find anything better than this from their brandy.

There is no doubt that Madame Lafitte's Domain Boingneres is the finest Bas-Armagnac has to offer. In the Grand Cru village of La Freche in a prime outcropping of the Armagnac's most ferrous sandy soils the beautiful and meticulously tended estate stands a head above the rest. Madame Lafitte took over from her father in 94 after his multi-decade career of building up Boingneres to being one of the top producers renowned across all of France. In 1975, Monsieur Lafitte removed all of the Domaine's Bacco and replaced them with the Cepage Noble (namely Ugni Blance, Folle Blanche, and Colombard). Each are distilled separately and aged in their dry chais in 100% new Gascogne wood. The high quality distillation is able to stand up to all that oak without any trouble and the resulting aged products are truly transcendent. This Domaine truly one of the benchmark by which all other Armagnac's should be judged. The 86 Folle Blanche is absolutely unparalleled in it's pinpoint structure and intense aromatics. There's a great deal of spice and a beautiful richness that keep it from seeming at all austere. Expense, but for great lovers of this region it is something to aspire to.

Additional Information:

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
