2014 Garage Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon "Lot #61" Maipo Alto (Previously $35)

SKU #1291772

Derek Mossman is up to some truly interesting things on the Chilean wine scene. Whether it's dry farmed Maule Carignane, Cabernet Franc, or this opulent, rich yet decidedly fresher take on Maipo Cab, the man is making very interesting wines and raising the qualitative bar. This particular Cabernet is from the Maipo Alto subsection of the Maipo Valley, and shows opulent, floral aromatics with a suggestion of eucalyptus as well. On the palate, the red fruits and plums are juicy and bright, with bright acidity and a relatively toned down use of oak framing the wine. (Joe Manekin, Chilean wine buyer)

This is Mountain Cabernet, a vineyard that is almost 1000m in the Andes. Better yet, it is unadorned mountain fruit. You cannot find that in Napa! This is a Cab that is about fruit, it is not a fruit bomb but sappy, bright, fresh dark red fruits and berries. There is just a hint of spice and herbal notes that just intensify the fruit. Full bodied and nicely textured this is a wine with immediate charm, but I will stash a bottle and check it out in a few to 5 years.

Hesitant to buy a wine from a smaller wine company in the Maipo at this price? Don't be! This is a gorgeous wine with something of the finesse of Bordeaux and the power of Napa combined into a balanced expression all its own. Garage Wine Co. works with small lots of fruit, sourced from the best vineyards throughout Chile, in this case one of the very best high-elevation Cabernet vineyards. Their wine-making philosophy is almost non-interventionist, with a focus on pure translation of fruit into wine. The Lot 61 Cabernet shows very bold, dark fruit, with plenty of structure and notes of green olive, eucalyptus, and cassis. The wine is neither overly pepper-y nor rough, but rather shows a seamless, smooth whole.

Additional Information:

- This red grape goes by many names, including Carignane, Carignano, Cariñena, Mazuelo, Moestal, Roussillonen and Samsó, which can make things confusing. A native of northern Spain's Cariñena DO, this grape is also found all over France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and is also planted in substantial amounts in Italy and California. A bold, spicy, tannic grape, you'll frequently find Carignan blended with softer, fruitier varieties like Grenache.

- Located on the western coast of South America and bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the East, the Chilean wine-growing climate is similar to that of California's Napa Valley and Bordeaux. The Chilean wine industry is known for being consistently free of phylloxera, but political and economic unrest has brought its own source of disorder. The recent establishment of a free market has resuscitated the wine industry, and significant investments have been made, switching the economic focus from domestic production to exports. Chile produces roughly a quarter of the wine Argentina produces, and is known for single-varietal exports, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. It's a popular region in the U.S. known for inexpensive and tasty wine.
