K&L Notes

The new Baron de Montfaucon label may confuse some but these are still the same great wines produced by our friends at Chateau de Montfaucon. The Baron label represents the relationship between the le Pin family and a few key growers whose fruit they wanted to work with. Combining these resources and overseeing all the vineyard practices, winemaker Rudi le Pin delivers the same quality and unique style. The Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of 70% Clairette, 20% Viognier and 10% Grenache Blanc.

Another knock-out from one of my favorite direct imports. Wine has been made at the Chateau de Montfaucon since 1520, and that kind of legacy results in superbly crafted blends year after year. This Cotes du Rhone blanc is no exception. The mostly Clairette blend has a viscous tropical fruitiness with a nice floral undertone from the Viognier. Great acid and mineral keep it fresh on the finish which is precise and lingering. One of the very best deals in white in the store. ‚Äč

Another fantastic wine from our friends at Montfaucon! This lovely Cote du Rhone Blanc is composed mostly of very old-vine Clairette, which lends a lovely texture and strength to the wine. On the whole, though, this wine is light, playful and full of elegant fruit and floral notes. This would be a great wine to sip on its own, or in combination with lighter appetizers.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
