2016 Bodegas Colomé Torrontes Valle Calchaquí Salta

SKU #1290885 91 points Decanter

Founded in 1831 and bought by Donald Hess in 2001, this is not only Argentina's oldest winery but also the owner of some exceptional high altitude vineyards - in fact the highest in the world at 3,111 metres above sea level. This wine is made from grapes grown at 1,700 metres, which lends a tangy and refreshing aroma with bright floral notes mixed with citrus and spice. This aromatic white is an absolutely cracker, more refreshing and vibrant than a Gewürztraminer and making it ideal as an aperitif or to pair with Asian food. (CG) (8/2017)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Torrontés is sourced from 50-year-old parral vineyards that yielded 10,000 kilos per hectare from vines planted at 1,700 and 2,300 meters altitude. Some 10% of the grapes were harvested early to provide freshness. It fermented slowly with neutral bayanus yeasts for some 35 days and lots of fine lees and was bottled without malolactic in the month of June. This is perfumed and lightly floral with the Torrontés notes making an appearance in the palate, which fills the mid palate and leaves that sensation of Moscatel pulp. This has the intensity of older vines and slightly longer fermentation and combines power with great freshness. The acidity seems to compensate the faint bitterness inherent to the grape. In general, they are harvesting the white grapes earlier than before, a general tendency they also started to apply to the reds in search of more freshness. This is the best young Torrontés I've had from Colomé. Kudos to winemaker Thibaud Delmotte and his team! (LG) (12/2016)

Jancis Robinson

Notable floral purity but not OTT. White blossom. But then a lovely fresh almost sour character, bone dry and salty/sour on the finish. Soils are salty. High pH and a lot of potassium. Impressive texture which counteracts the grape's potential bitterness rather than relying on residual sugar. Mineral and with a slight grip. Rich in the mouth and great acidity. Long too. Mouth-wateringly delicious. GV (17/20 points) (JH) (5/2017)

Vinous

Pale, bright yellow. Pungent grapefruit aroma lifted by flowers and dusty spices. Quite dry and spicy, showing modest texture but good salty energy to its citrus, ginger and nutmeg flavors. Finishes with a suggestion of saline minerality but also a bit of a burn. This is best today on the perfumed nose. (ST) (7/2017)

Wine Enthusiast

Citrus blossom and leesy vanilla notes open this balanced aromatic white from Argentina's north. Leesy tropcial-fruit flavors focus on lychee and lime. The wine is moderately long on a simple but solid finish. (MS) (12/2017)

K&L Notes

From biodynamically farmed Torrontes, this wine is produced from some of the highest elevation vines in production anywhere in the world, at more than 7,000 feet above sea level! Very floral aromas with juicy yellow plums and white peaches lead to a lovely, slightly spicy and floral, yet refreshing palate. Another great effort from one of our favorite Argentinian wineries.

Beautiful wine indeed. Night jasmine aromatics, together with some other exotic flowers, honey and herb spices. All of that surrounded by a crispy acidity which rounds it up, and make it a perfect pairing with Asian food, seafood, or any spicy food.

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
