 There is a mild hint of the exotic to the very fresh, layered and fresh mix of both white and yellow orchard fruit that is liberally laced with Chablis and wood elements. I like the textured mouth feel to the round and relatively forward mid-palate of the medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and positively huge length on the citrus-inflected finale. This exceptionally promising effort is also going to need a few years of cellaring to develop but it should be terrific in time.  (10/2016)

 After the misfiring Les Clos, the 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir restores order with an excellent showing. Matured 25% in oak barrel and the remainder in stainless steel, it has a refined, almost understated bouquet, but that should not deter you from admiring its precision and focus. There is fine mineralité here, but it will require a few years to be unlocked. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, fine tension and weight in the mouth, with a touch of spice developing towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. Give this 3-4 years and you will have a well-crafted Vaudésir. (NM)  (8/2016)

 Ripe yellow stone fruits, almond and acacia flower on the nose, plus a hint of exotic fruits. Large-scaled, rich and broad but given shape by lovely mineral-driven acidity. The wine's classic dryness and notes of menthol and almond make it quite backward today and currently overshadow the fruit, and yet this wine already has more sex appeal than the Clos. Finishes broad, powerful and long, with a slightly tannic character. 92+ (ST)  (7/2016)

Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, M√Ęcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.

True French Chablis is a delicate, stony, crisp Chardonnay, bearing no resemblance to the anonymous plonk so labeled here.
