2012 Felsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva

SKU #1287492 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A ripe, powerful wine, the 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia offers a level of finesse that balances some of the more overt intensity of the year. Dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice add shades of nuance as this beautifully delineated Rancia opens up in the glass. Because of its mid-weight structure, I expect the 2012 will give up its charms relatively early by Rancia standards, which means around age 15-20. The 2012 is not an obvious or explosive Rancia, rather is a wine built on compelling overall harmony. (AG) 94+ Inner quote mark (9/2015)

Outer quote mark Full-bodied and loaded with finesse, this opens with aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit, exotic spice, toast and a whiff of new oak. The firm palate delivers ripe black cherry, crushed plum, clove and ground pepper alongside fine-grained tannins. (KO) Inner quote mark (9/2015)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The single-vineyard 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a luminous and radiant Sangiovese-based wine. The vineyard is characterized by well-draining gravel soils with alberese and tufo limestone. Rancia delivers a beautiful sense of roundness and softness with dark berry, blackberry, leather, spice and pressed rose petal. This is an articulate and sophisticated wine. You can count on this Chianti Classico for excellent quality in what was a patchy vintage in other parts of the appellation. (ML) Inner quote mark (12/2016)

Outer quote mark An elegant and silky textured red with berry, hints of mineral and light chocolate aromas and flavors. Full body, integrated tannins and a fresh finish. Crisp. Inner quote mark (8/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark 100% Sangiovese on limestone soils at 400-420 m. 18-20 months in new French oak barrels. Brick red with deeper core. Distinctive aroma with a light note of coffee as well as the dried-fruit notes. A little earthy. Moreish and tangy on the palate, fresh and savoury at the same time, some sour-cherry on the finish giving a mouth-watering aftertaste. It opens to what seems like a stemmy, almost herbal, note (though the grapes are destemmed), increasing the freshness. 17/20 points (JH) Inner quote mark (9/2016)

A classic. This is Sangiovese that most Brunello should aspire towards. Dark, powerful, polished and long.

Felsina's "Rancia" ranks among my favorite wines. It's a truly special Chianti Riserva that in most vintages can age for decades yet remains a relative bargain. It's uniqueness is in no small part due to the fact that the more recent vines planted are Massal selections (graftings from older vines within the Rancia vineyard as opposed to nursery selections). This adds a depth and complexity to an already great Sangiovese. The 2012 drinks beautifully today with rich fruit, wonderful palate density and finish. This is its 29th vintage and it's as outstanding as ever.

I am stunned by this vintage of Rancia! There are so much finesse and sublime fruit and texture in this wine that it's almost unreal. It's absolutely complete and harmonious wine; deep bright rich wild plum and savory spicy palate has firm structure and long finish full of juicy acidity. That finish just never stops! It's not often I see such perfect combination of ripe fruit and freshness. When those two things come together the result can be astonishing; and so is this Felsina Rancia.

While the hot and dry 2012 vintage kept some Chianti winemakers on the edge of their seat, a bit of rain at the end of August brought relief and extended the growing season for the thick-skinned grape. That extra ripening is apparent as the aromatics of the wine jump out of the glass, The wine is structured yet pure with deep and inviting classic Sangiovese plum notes and fresh baking spice. Enjoyably paired with food now and filled with aging potential.

This boasts a deep ruby/purple color, lots of black cherries, raspberries, and currants with hints spice, Tuscan dust and minerals. There is a great texture on this full- bodied wine; it has a long, authoritative finish that combines power with elegance. I would drink this over the next couple of years.

My first memory of visiting Felsina will always be the Rancia vineyard: Giuseppe Mazzocolin spent an extra five minutes in his office searching for something. He returned in a driving rainstorm and popped a tape into the player in his Range Rover, hit a button and Etta James began singing “Stormy Weather.” We slid around in the mud for an eternity until we finally arrived at Rancia. The ancient convent that Rancia is named for is one of the most ideal places for Sangiovese in all of Chianti Classico: the soil is perfect, the exposition is perfect and the wine is almost always…well it’s Rancia. For those of us Californians who rarely experience real rain, experiencing Italian rain for the first time, well it rates up there with the Biblical versions. Yet I digress,… Rancia isn’t just Chianti, it epitomizes Chianti from this southeastern corner of Chianti Classico and in the 2012 version it’s fabulous. The nose is Sangiovese, not dark fruit or red fruit, it’s Sangiovese fruit. That’s not just a simple fruit...it’s haunting, summoning, swirling waves of violet, lilac, spiced plums, each aroma and flavor a kaleidoscope unto itself. On the palate it is a complex mélange of flavors supported by a powerful backbone and sustaining tannic structure that show a wine in complete harmony and balance that is really drinkable now but will allow the wine to age for a couple decades plus. This is really lovely.
Drink from 2017 to 2035
