1999 Descendientes de Jose Palacios "Villa de Corullón" Mencía Bierzo

SKU #1287229 93 points Wine Spectator

*Highly Recommended* Intense and intriguing. This distinctive red is polished and savage at once, with flavors of ripe black fruit, toasty oak and fragrant wild herbs. The tannins are muscular yet polished, the wine rich yet harmonious. A beauty. Mencía. (TM) (10/2001)

Medium ruby. Finer, more aromatic nose than the regular Bierzo cassis, blackberry, blueberry, violet, minerals, iron and a hint of cabernet franc-like leafiness. Juicy, brisk and penetrating, with superb delineation and grip. More tannic than the Bierzo bottling but also more aromatic in the mouth; almost makes the regular wine seem heavy. Finishes with tongue-coating tannins and excellent length. A fascinating wine that conveys a strong impression of site character. (ST) (11/2001)
