Not long after reviving that brandy house, Gabriel turned his attention to rum, creating Plantation and endowing it with a Cognac distiller’s sense of balance, elegance and variety. OFTD (Old-Fashioned Traditional Dark), created with input from rum specialists including cocktail historian David Wondrich and tiki expert Martin Cate, is a blockbuster. Earlier Plantation dark rums had relied exclusively on Trinidadian stocks, but OFTD instead blends Jamaican rum’s oily funk with Guyana’s focused intensity and Barbados’s lithe grace—all in a powerhouse package at 138 proof. The Old Fashioned Traditional Dark rum from Plantation is a recreation of the most traditional style of English rums, bottled at a full 20 points over proof. The big, rich pot still style that was popular in the age of the sail is all but lost to the modern age of light and flavored rums. The salty band of misfits brought together by Plantation's Alexander Gabriel are famous in tiki circles and beyond: Jeff Berry, Martin Cate, Paul McFadyen, Paul McGee, Scott Schuder, and David Wondrich. They blended heavy, dark rums from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica and bottled it at a blistering 138 proof, which is perfect for punch grog and tiki alike.
