2014 Adegas Valtea "Finca Garabato" Albariño Rias Baixas

SKU #1283668

Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. You will notice that it says "2o Año" on the label, which refers to the fact that it ages in tank on its lees for a year following fermentation. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which, particularly in a cooler vintage like 2014, really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer and ready to take on a meal.

Valtea is one of my absolute favorite new producers from Rias Baixas. Typically I am attracted to tangy, briny Albarino from the coastal regions, but this winery hails from a sub zone a little further inland. This makes for a slightly more robust style of Albarino. In the "Finca Garabato" bottling, the wine rests on its lees for an entire year, resulting in a wine with plenty of depth and texture. The flavors also are more autolytic and savory, as opposed to the more fruit-forward younger wine they produce. But don't be deceived: although this is a richer wine, there is still great freshness and acidity with classic Albarino flare.
