2016 Paolo Caciorgna "Guardoilvento" Etna Rosso

SKU #1279915 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark The nose here is quite unlike anything else, exuberant dried-cherry kernels, ash and sweet tobacco lead, before Christmas pudding and leather take center stage. The full-bodied palate has Barolo-like richness with structured tannins and a colorful spectrum of dried fruit. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

K&L Notes

Paolo Caciorgna has amassed an impressive resumé (current winemaker at Montalcino's Altesino and La Serena, among others), but it was a small surprise when in 2006 he decided to add to his stable of projects the resurrection of two very old, pre-phylloxera vineyard sites on the northern slopes of Sicily's Mount Etna. The Guardoilvento vineyard is a north/northeasterly facing site of high-density (8,000 vines/ha) Nerello Mascalese vines on black volcanic ash and sandy soils with high mineral content. The wine is vinified in stainless steel before aging for ten months in used French barrique. Etna is indisputably one of Italy's most vibrant regions today, and it's no small thanks to immense talents like Paolo working with stunning vineyard sites like Guardoilvento.

Wines of Paolo Caciorgna have always struck me as some of the most elegant and sublime wines from Etna. 2016 "Guardoilvento" is silky, medium bodied wine with exquisite aromas and flavors. It's starts with notes of black fruit and earth and later unveils an intricate bouquet of wild herbs and volcanic soil, creating an unforgettable impression. I literally could just sit and enjoy the aromas for hours. The palate supports initial aromatics. It's smooth with great balance of lively acidity and moderate, structured tannins with lots of herbs, spices and a mixture of dark red fruits and black cherries; long complex finish. This wine is a true work of art and sheer pleasure to drink!

Paolo Caciorgnia is not only one of the nicest people I've met in the wine world but also he's an extremely talented winemaker as reflected by his 2016 Etna Rosso "Guardoilvento" that arrived on our sales floor recently. The afore named vineyard yields grapes from very old/pre-phylloxera vines planted at 2500 feet. This 100% Nerello Mascalese is pure and fragrant with waves of spiced red fruits, rose petals, licorice and volcanic minerals. It's certainly one of the most pristine examples of Etna Rosso I've come across not to mention one of the finest.
