2014 Beckmen "Cuvée Le Bec" Santa Ynez Rhône Blend

SKU #1278999 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Leading off the reds and California’s take on a quality Cotes du Rhône, the peppery, black and blue fruits and floral-scented 2014 Cuvee le Bec is plump, medium to full-bodied, rounded and beautifully textured on the palate. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years. Note, the blend here is 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 8% Mourvèdre and 7% Counoise, which spent 16 months in neutral oak barrels. (JD) (8/2016)

90 points Vinous

The 2014 Cuvée Le Bec is an absolutely delicious wine as well as a tremendous value. Supple, vibrant and impeccably well-balanced, the 2014 offers considerable near and medium-term appeal, with plenty of vibrant fruit pushed forward. Le Bec is 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 8% Mourvèdre and 7% Counoise. (AG) (9/2016)

Wine Enthusiast

This is a great everyday wine, with well-integrated aromas of pressed boysenberry, dried black cherry, black pepper and a touch of asphalt. Blueberry, beef crust, soy and pepper converge on the palate. The wine is smooth enough to work with a variety of dishes but packed with enough action to serve alone as well. (MK) (2/2017)

Wine Spectator

Vibrant and zesty, with fresh red berry aromas and flavors of roasted herb, pepper and licorice. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Drink now through 2023. (TF, Web-2017)

I really enjoy a solid red Rhone blend, at a great price. This 2014 expression of the Cuvee Le Bec is a smooth, approachable, red fruited number, that also has a hint of tobacco. It persists on the palate with a hefty richness of fruit and minerality. Red wines don't get too much easier to drink than this!

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
