James Suckling
Intense aromas of blackberry, tar and wet earth follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Bark and cigar box undertones. A solid and powerful red yet balanced and poised. Give it two or three years of bottle age after release to soften.

Wine Advocate
The opaque purple 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) has a Château Latour-like nose of cedar wood, graphite, oodles of creme de cassis and forest floor, stunning concentration, power and structure. This is an amazing wine, and with 1,635 cases produced, it has reasonable availability. This all is produced from the so-called clone 7, which became better known across the street and up on the Vaca hillsides as the Eisele Vineyard clone. This wine should really be laid down for 7-8 years and probably has a good 40-50 years of potential longevity. (RP) 96+

Vinous
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (black label) is utterly magnificent. Towering and statuesque, the 2013 deftly balances ripeness, intensity and freshness, with suave tannins (for a big wine) and fabulous overall balance. A host of sweet red plum, pomegranate, spice, white pepper, crushed rocks and rose petal add the final shades of nuance. The 2013 is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. The black label Cabernet Sauvignon emerges from parcels in the center of the estate planted on Cortina gravel. (AG)

Decanter
Rich aromas of black fruits, plum sauce, peking duck and dark spice tones are followed by a wine of impressive textural refinement and deep, meaty density. Like the other Larkmead bottlings, this needs time to unfurl, but its raw materials are impressive. (WK)

Wine Spectator
Bold and assertive, generous and supple, with a mix of loamy earth, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and underbrush flavors. A powerful yet refined expression best served by short-term cellaring. (JL)

Jancis Robinson
Distinctive aromatics of fresh herbs, crushed black rock, and grilled meats roll into flavours of tobacco, tar and a touch of anise. Ultra-fine and persistent tannins and just enough acidity to balance. There is nice freshness here, even with such a dark character, and the wine stays fluid and light on the palate. While oak has clearly been used for this wine it helps to open and show the fruit rather than cloak it. 17.5+/20 points (ECB)
