Yuu Baal Madrecuixe Artisanal Mezcal (750ml)

SKU #1273338

Yuu Baal is one of the best new mezcal labels we've seen from Oaxaca in the last few years, originating from the town of San Juan del Rio, one of the region's most well-regarded distillation centers. The brand (which translates to "earth" and "fire" in Zapotec) also incorporates spirits from San Luis del Rio, Santa Ana del Rio, and Santo Domingo Albarradas in what has immediately become one of the most diverse and high-quality line-ups we carry. Madrecuixe is one of the most coveted and complex of the mezcal wild agaves, and the immediate aromas from the Yuu Baal expression showcase exactly why. On the nose, distinct and potent earthy elements intermingle with an ethereal smoky note that smells like a fire pit after it's been doused with water. The balance between those elements on the palate is a spectacle to behold, as the flavors meander from vegetal to sweet agave fruit to subtle spice, and then back to plant matter and earth. This is truly a mezcal expression for those who seek out the most potent agave flavors. This artisanal Mezcal is cooked in a stone oven and milled with a sledgehammer. Wild fermentation takes place in oak vats before a double distillation in a copper still. This is the last chance to secure 750ml bottles before they move to a smaller format. They wanted to ensure the 750ml's were gone when the 375ml bottles launched, so they've offered them at very compelling discounted prices. When they're gone, they're gone.

Texturally insane and super compelling aromatically. The nose highlights stone fruits, fresh savory cooking herbs, sweet cooked agave, wet stone, and a healthy but not overpowering amount of smoke. The palate is otherworldly. Bottled at 48% ABV, it's powerful, yet the mezcal feels silky and delicate. It slips across your tongue and lights up each taste bud as it goes. A little smoke here, a dash of cracked peppercorn there, a sprinkle of cilantro, sage, thyme, and agave nectar. It's a culinary experience in a glass. Wild agave mezcals are rarely available in the US for under $100. This is a steal and a half thanks to some marketing decisions the brand has made regarding bottling size. It's an exceptional time to take advantage of the situation in a world where agave spirit pricing seems to always go up.
