2015 Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Rasteau (Previously $14)

SKU #1272389 Wine Spectator

Very fresh, with unadorned plum and black cherry fruit streaming through, backed by a pretty violet note on the finish. Has just enough grip to stay honest. (JM) (12/2016)

K&L Notes

An award winner at many French wine competitions, the Dame Victoria is an impressive Rhône red raised not far from the fabled vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Warmly fruited and full of robust, rustic character, the nose offers minerality and blue fruit notes, which are echoed on the palate and joined with berries, berries and more berries. Elegant on the supple finish, this is just the red to pair with chicken, burgers, roasts and cheesy vegetarian dishes.

We have been importing the productions from this growers’ co-operative from the village area of Rasteau in the Southern Rhone Valley for nearly twenty years, now, and the quality consistency has just been outstanding year after year. And when take into account a great vintage in that area as the 2015 is, the quality of wine suddenly becomes stunning even when you consider the price point. Traditionally produced from Grenache {70%}, Syrah {20%}, and Mourvedre {10%}, this medium-deep ruby in color wine offers lush, distinctive aromas of white pepper, anise, blueberry fruit with creamy to truffle-like background notes in the nose that carries into a rich, round, nicely balanced palate impression. Good fullness and weight in the midrange, with excellent structure and silkiness that leads into its long, warm finish, this Gem is one to consume in the near-term which Rusty and I plan to do for the next three to six years – maybe longer. I have been ordered to bring home cases of this Gem and he thinks that you should think in the same terms. A DELICIOUS VALUE! …..A K&L WINE MERCHANTS’ DIRECT IMPORT….. ***** 14.5% ABV *****

The “Dame” comes from the local co-op in the village of Rasteau. We have been working with this winery for years and it never disappoints, while offering great cost-to-quality value. The wine is loaded with silky black and blue fruit, with flavors of dried blueberry and Chambord liqueur, plus notes of cinnamon and allspice.

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
