2013 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

SKU #1270741 100 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark One of the most classic examples of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon I could imagine is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Spottswoode. This blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot is a truly heavenly, classic wine built for the ages. Offering beautiful notes of black and blue fruits, graphite, exotic spices, violets and spring flowers, with a touch of earthy, damp river rock-like minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, stunning purity of fruit, perfect balance, building tannin, and a great, great finish. 99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet with a touch of purple and exudes pure black truffles on the nose to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal a core of black cherries, warm blackcurrants and plum preserves with suggestions of eucalyptus, tilled soil, char grill and new leather. Medium-bodied with a great intensity of earth-tinged black fruits, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a long truffle-laced finish. (LP) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

98 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Glorious blueberries, blackberries, violets, and hot stones. Cloves and other spices. Even sliced mushrooms. Full body, very firm tannins, and a persistent and savory finish. A tight and polished young Cabernet. Inner quote mark (1/2016)

98 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as monumental as it has always been. A big, vertical wine, the 2013 exudes concentration, depth and vertical intensity-from the very first taste. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit in this brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. Licorice, coffee and leather overtones add the closing shades of nuance. Explosive and riveting, the 2013 remains one of the finest wines ever made here. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

98 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This remarkable wine from the famed family-farmed, organic estate impresses immediately in its depth of concentration and stately grace, imparting a wealth of rose-garden compost and wild truffle on the nose. Within the vibrant range of sensual flavor is salted caramel, black cherry and chocolate, alongside a twist of saddle and campfire coffee. Its grip of focused tannin suggests years of aging potential. *#4 Top 100 Wines of 2017, Cellar Selection* (VB) Inner quote mark (11/2017)

97 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Nuances of clove, tar and graphite marry with crunchy dark fruit, introducing a firmly structured and intensely concentrated wine with striking cut and energy. This is one of the best young Spottswoode's of recent times, and one of the most vibrant, primary benchland Cabernet Sauvignons of the vintage—likely to be one of the most long-lived. K&L Notes

93+ points Stephen Tanzer in Vinous: "Saturated ruby to the rim. Classic young Spottswoode scents of cassis, boysenberry, black cherry, lavender and coffee bean. Wonderfully juicy but tightly wound, conveying a medicinal backward character to the flavors of dark fruits and musky cocoa powder. The tannins are huge and a bit chalky but not dry. This extremely primary, floral wine should be long-lived and should ultimately merit an even higher rating. Novak Milliken described the 2013 as the most tannic recent vintage for Spottswoode. "The 2012 has bigger, plusher fruit and the 2010 has sweet fruit over a precise backbone, while the 2013 has more masculine tannins but also some wonderfully floral aromatics that the 2010 does not have." (Incidentally, I had the chance to sample the 2014 Spottswoode from barrel and it's also a fairly massively tannic and highly concentrated wine." (06/2016)
