Bollinger "Special Cuvée" Brut Champagne (1.5L)

SKU #1260178 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Bollinger’s NV Special Cuvée knocks it out of the park. Made from 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Meunier, with 30% of the blend brought up in barrels, it boasts a rich, deep, medium to full-bodied style as well as terrific notes of lemon curd, crème brûlée, caramelized stone fruits, and hints of toasty nuttiness that develop with time in the glass. It’s a big, rich Champagne that stays balanced and pure. Beautiful stuff. 2018-2028. Inner quote mark (3/2018)

Outer quote mark Trademark Bollinger complexity with apples, brioche and grapefruit in a very subtly reductive style. The palate is super fine, even and elegant with a refreshing lemon, lime, light-berry and apple-brioche finish. Drink now. Inner quote mark (9/2018)

Outer quote mark Bollinger's NV Brut Special Cuvée is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier, and the grapes are mostly (more than 85%) sourced in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages. The majority of the Special Cuvée is reserve wines, part of which have been aged in magnums for five to 15 years. The disgorgement I tasted in May 2018 displays an intense golden-citrus color and has a refreshing, concentrated bouquet of citrus fruits, sweet cherries, ripe apples, white flowers, toast, walnuts, ripe apricots and peaches, with just a touch of brioche. On the palate, this is an intense, very elegant and refined cuvée with a very long, refreshing, intense, aromatic and salty finish. This is an excellent Champagne with a beautiful chalky texture in the aftertaste. (SR) Inner quote mark (6/2018)

Outer quote mark Bright, almost crunchy acidity and the finely detailed mousse carry an expressive mix of poached apricot and cherry fruit, toast point, orange peel and ground ginger flavors in this firm, focused Champagne, with a graphite-laced, minerally finish. Drink now through 2022. (AN) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

K&L Notes

A Pinot Noir-dominated blend that always includes a generous proportion of reserve wines. The biggest and boldest of the big house non-vintages, this is still made from mostly estate fruit. All of the reserve wines are aged in magnums under natural cork, and a large percentage of the fruit is still barrel fermented. In an age where a lot of the big houses are concentrating more on marketing and less on the product, Bollinger continues their tradition of quality. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Just when I thought I couldn’t love Bollinger Special Cuvée any more, this magnum came into my life. While I have always appreciated the Bollinger process of hand-riddling their larger format, and it’s clear that bigger bottles age a bit more slowly than 750ml and 375ml, I hadn’t given much thought to the taste differences between sizes. This was a revelation. I shared a 1.5L bottle at brunch recently, and the laser-like acidity and steely brightness were opposite the more oxidative, rounded style expected of Bollinger. While the texture and leesy character were apparent, the magnum showed a freshness and nimble quality that paired perfectly with any food we tried. It was the opulent character of Bollinger, amplified and tempered by raciness. Awesome.
