2010 Favia "Quarzo" Amador County Syrah

Decanter
From Shake Ridge Ranch, a classic Amador site meticulously farmed by Ann Kraemer. Entering its secondary phase, with aromas of dried raspberries, incense, bay leaf and gravel. The texture splits the difference between new-school richness and an earthy, leathery rusticity leading to the finish. 2% of Viognier was added this vintage. (ML)

The 2010 Syrah Quarzo is stunningly beautiful. Fresh, vibrant and chiseled to the core, the 2010 is endowed with tons of energy and tension in its black fruit, herb and lavender notes. Readers will have to be patient. Today it is the wine's primary intensity and sizzling minerality that stand out most. I image the 2010 will be fabulous once the aromatics fully open up. The 2010 is 98% Syrah and 2% Viognier, from Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County. (AG) 94+

Chewy and gutsy, with rich, firm layers of blackberry, crushed rock, cedar and anise. At once powerful and graceful, this is a sure bet to gain with time in the cellar. (JL)
