2005 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne

SKU #1258891 94 points James Suckling

Impressive concentration and power here. This is really assertive with ripe yellow orchard fruits and citrus within a core encased in a layer of more savory, toasty notes on both the nose and palate. There's that gentle hint of aldehyde that is the traditional stamp of the house plus savory woody notes, white mushrooms and some chalk and spices, too. The palate has a fleshy opening, filling out with peach and hazelnut flavors before a smooth ride to the finish. Approachable and complex. (10/2016)

A powerful, structured and graceful 2005, showing deft integration of the rich, chalky underpinning, firm acidity and expansive flavors of crushed black currant, spring blossom, toasted almond, crystallized honey and preserved lemon. Offers a fine, raw silk-like mousse and a long, spiced finish. Disgorged February 2015. Drink now through 2030. *Highly Recommended* (AN) (11/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Magnum. Relatively deep gold. Mushroomy, weighty, very serious with a dry finish. Very Bollinger. Lively and admirable. Quite long. 17/20 points (10/2016)

When does a vintage Champagne like this show at its best? Usually right after it sells out, and this is about to! The lush, rich, toasty, decadent 2005 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne is one of our most delicious vintage bottles in the store for drinking now. It should also keep very well! The 2005 is almost all estate, and composed of 70% Pinot Noir (mostly Ay and Verzenay) and 30% Chardonnay (mostly Mesnil, Avize and Chouilly). Like all Bollinger vintage, treated to long ageing on the lees on a cork instead of a cap, so the cork that you pop before enjoying is the 2nd that has been in the bottle.
Drink from 2017 to 2025

With a nose of caramel and toasted hazelnut, Bollinger feels opulent right out of the gate. Dark-fruited (you can really tell this is mostly Pinot Noir), the 2005 Grand Année is rich, with an oxidative, almost sherried quality throughout the palate, plus hints of warm spice and underlying chalk. Made with 90% Grand Cru fruit, this is Bollinger’s very reasonably priced tête de cuvée, concentrated and powerful yet incredibly silky and ready to drink. James Bond’s favorite Champagne impresses as always.

This delicious release from Bollinger reminds me of the Bollinger's of the past. Rich and round, with generous hazelnut flavors and a long, lingering finish. Honey ed, but balanced with a good amount of chalk and a slight oxidation, which, in this case, is a really good thing! Toasty and creamy, with generous caramel mid-palate. Last, but, not least, an excellent bargain at this price! Also, keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming 2005 vintage Grande Annee Brut Rose. I tried that one last night and it was a stunner!

What a spectacular vintage from Bollinger! The soft, early-developing fruit from the 2005 vintage perfectly suits the Bollinger style. With deep, nutty notes and soft, fleshy fruit, this is perhaps one of the most decadent expressions of the Grande Annee from Bollinger that we have seen yet. Although the wine is already drinking beautifully and showing some age characteristics, it certainly has the power and presence to continue to age in bottle for some time.

This is rich velvety vintage Champagne at its best! Made from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from mostly Grand Cru vineyard sites, it has very rich fruit flavors of black currant, exotic fruits and citrus with a deep toasted brioche note as well as aged cheese nuances. Its acid is soft and elegant, letting the richness of the fruit take center stage, and stay there long after the finish. Drinking perfect right now!

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Rheims, Epernay, and Ay) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range from the basic brut (often blends of several vintages), single vintage champagnes, and rose.
