2006 Veuve Clicquot "La Grande Dame" Brut Rosé Champagne

SKU #1258065 94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Delicate flavors of white raspberry, toast, candied ginger and smoky minerality are seamlessly knit in this vibrant rosé Champagne, slowly expanding on the palate into the lasting finish of fruit, saline and sliced almond. Disgorged September 2014. Drink now through 2030. (AN) Inner quote mark (12/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Deep gold-orange. Almost coppery. Not much on the nose, a touch salty, then light red fruits and even a hint of blossom. Slightly smoky on the palate, super-dry and finely textured, supple and subtle but with good length. Tannins are elegant and present, serious and persistent and are very significant in the overall style of this wine. This has a real savoury wine-like quality, even though only 15% of the blend is red wine. 17.5/20 Points (JH) Inner quote mark (10/2015)

K&L Notes

The anchor, the Christian symbol for hope and rigour, was chosen in 1798 by Philippe Clicquot, the founder of the House, as the cork brand, the only distinguishing mark in the era before labels. As a symbol of hope, the anchor was a perfect emblem for a young entrepreneur with faith in the prosperity of his newly founded business. Madame Clicquot continued to use the same cork brand when she took over the running of the House in 1805. In keeping the anchor emblem throughout the centuries, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin remains faithful to the signs and symbols of its roots.

HUGE surprise! As 2006 has produced champagnes that are largely very rich, this vintage Grande Dame Brut Rose is clean, muted and elegant. A nose of pomegranate, nectarine and black cherries, with a light hint of smoke. On the palate, bright red fruits, orange marmalade/orange peel and cream. Very fine character with a long finish of minerals. Should age very well.

If you are looking for something for the wine lover that has had it all, you have found it. This entirely Grand Cru masterpiece has the vanishing delicacy and haunting complexity for the most discerning of palates. After tasting it for the first time, I was taken aback by how effortless it was, and after drinking it with food I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. This class is not magic, but straight from the vineyard. The 15% Pinot Noir that gives this rose its color and flavor is from the Clos Colin in the Grand Cru of Bouzy, a mid slope jewel in the very best terroir for the red wine for rose Champagne. This is expensive, but what a wine!
Drink from 2016 to 2056
