Graphite, lavender, mint, licorice and plums literally jump out of the glass in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. Vibrant and powerful in the glass, the 2013 is endowed with striking nuance for a wine of its size. The wine's explosive energy is compelling, but it will be a number of years before the 2013 is ready to drink. It is pretty magical at this early stage just the same. (AG)

Celebrating its 40th anniversary vintage, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Stag’s Leap Vineyard (S.L.V.) Estate-Grown may be one of the all-time great offerings from Stag’s Leap Vineyard. It’s not easy to say after 40 years of achievement, but it is certainly a candidate for one of the finest Stags Leap Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons ever made, particularly under this moniker (We have to exclude the Cask 23 and the Fay Vineyard.) Opulent, with fabulous texture, a dense purple color, great blueberry and blackcurrant fruit with spice and flowers, this is sexy Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink beautifully for another 20 years or more. The balance is sensational. (RP)

'The most Bordeaux in style,' said one of our panelists during our blind tasting of Napa Valley Cabernets. It’s an interesting comment about the 40th Anniversary vintage of the wine that won the Judgment of Paris. He noted the wine’s red fruit character as well as an edge of greenness. In this case, that evergreen edge has a distinctly California connotation, a foresty scent of the hills above the Stag’s Leap Vineyard. There’s a significant presence of oak, in the polish of the tannins and the dark scent of cocoa nibs, but the red fruit has lasting intensity, powering through the oak without any excess weight, leaving a sense of refinement and the sense memory of a beautiful textural pleasure.

A ‘power year’ for Napa, says winemaker Marcus Notaro, this warm vintage with a dry start contributes to this wine’s powerful, hearty structure. All candied fruits on the nose – dark berried, condensed and concentrated – and completed on the fruitcake palate. The wine has a taut structure, with steeped tea-like tannins, drying still but equally contributing to a rush of acidity that washes the dark fruit flavours over and through the palate. A big wine offering enormous pleasure. Drinking now, with the capacity to keep driving for 25 years. (CT)

96 points Robert Parker in Wine Advocate: "The 40th anniversary cuvée 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. is a real beauty without a hard edge to be found. It has a velvety texture, beautiful blueberry, black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, a judicious touch of oak, sweet, creamy full-bodied opulence, stunning purity, and represents a prodigious effort to celebrate 40 years."
