2015 Bourgneuf, Pomerol (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1251730 95 points James Suckling

Impressive fresh violets and earthy notes with ripe dark plums. Leads to a very rich palate with ripe dark cherries, mulberries and boysenberries. Smooth tannins exude suave polish, and there's terrific fleshy appeal into the finish. All class. Try from 2022. (2/2018)

Again maintaining the success that this estate showed en primeur, and reflecting the positive changes made at the property under a new generation led by Frederic Vayron. Well integrated tannins, with blackberry fruit which feels suspended as it tightropes through the palate. This should age well. (JA) (11/2017)

92 points Wine Spectator

Dark and saturated with fig flavors, showing extra boysenberry and black currant compote notes. Ganache and tobacco accents fill in the finish, giving this a slightly gutsy profile. Should mellow with cellaring, as the fruit is hedonistic. Best from 2020 through 2030. (JM) (3/2018)

91 points Wine Enthusiast

Powerful tannins give a dense wine, rich with ripe black fruits and solid tannins. The acidity and the weight of the fruit hold the promise for the future of this concentrated wine. Don't drink before 2026. (RV) (4/2018)

90 points Jeb Dunnuck

Managed by the Moueix team, the 2015 Château Bourgneuf offers a darker, earthier style in its ripe black fruits, tobacco, earth, and underbrush scented bouquet. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated Pomerol that has ripe tannin and plenty of length. Drink this total charmer anytime over the coming decade or so. (11/2017)

90 points Vinous

The 2015 Bourgneuf is a plump, juicy Pomerol that will drink well upon release. Pliant and expressive, with silky tannins, the 2015 offers plenty of forward fruit, but in a super-classic, mid-weight frame. Tobacco, mint and crushed flowers add layers of nuance. Although not the last word on complexity, the 2015 is really quite lovely and delicious. Tasted two times. (AG) (2/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Bourgneuf is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, featuring a medium garnet-purple color and aromas of smoked meats, black truffles, tapenade and charcoal with a fruity core of black and red cherries, plum preserves and blueberry coulis plus a waft of aniseed. Medium to full-bodied, delicately structured and with lively fruit expression, it finishes on an earthy note. (LPB) (2/2018)

This wine is rarely one of my favorites, but for the 2015 vintage the Bourgneuf seems to be hitting on all cylinders! A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it shows a dark purple color, with tons of red and black fruits and hints of savory herbs and smoke. A nice wine that should be approachable young!

An impressive Bourgneuf, loaded with deep berry fruit, pepper and spice. Good length and energy, this is easily the best Bourgneuf I have ever tasted from barrel.
Top Value! Drink from 2019 to 2029

If you’re looking for something a little more old school and less fruit-forward, then the 2015 Bourgneuf is the wine for you. There was more pronounced oak on the palate that will need to integrate over the next five years and a dustiness to the tannins that helped balance the lush fruit. This is a wine that should evolve beautifully over the next decade; a real cellar candidate.

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
