2011 Sanguis "Mule" Santa Barbara County Red Blend

SKU #1250657 93 points Vinous

Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, brooding dark fruit compote aromas slowly open and gain spiciness with air, taking on exotic incense, potpourri and smoked meat nuances. Dense blackcurrant and blueberry flavors are given lift and cut by smoky minerals, showing a suave, floral pastille nuance on the back half. Brawny and concentrated for sure, but there's energy here as well. Closes broad and chewy, with repeating smokiness and dusty tannins that contribute shape and grip. (JR) (12/2014)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Mule is a rocking blend of 78% Syrah, 16% Grenache, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Roussanne and 1% Viognier. Fermented with 20% whole clusters and aged 22 months in 33% new French oak, it gives up impressive dark fruits, pepper, game and hints of cedar and spice to go with a medium to full-bodied, nicely focused feel on the palate. It opens up nicely in the glass and should drink nicely over the coming 5-8 years. (JD) (8/2014)
