A more long term prospect, the 2011 Syrah Bossman (100% Syrah) comes all from Bien Nacido and spent 28 months in 15% new oak. Showing classic Santa Barbara County Syrah notes of dark fruits, exotic pepper, smoked herbs and hints of leather, it flows onto the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture and fine tannin. Give it a year or two and enjoy bottles through 2023. (JD)

Dark purple. Expansive aromas of blackberry, cassis, star anise, minerals and violet, with a smoky overtone. Stains the palate with black and blue fruit compote flavors, picking up a sexy floral pastille quality with air. Deep and powerful but surprisingly graceful, offering a complex melange of dark fruit, floral pastille and spice elements that linger through a long, subtly tannic finish. (JR)

Quirky, art-minded winemaker Matthias Sanguis crafts a stellar Syrah, with a lush bouquets of violets, blue raspberry, black peppercorns and vanilla. The palate, bound together with a lean acidic line down the middle, presents dark but tart cherries, sweet tobacco and the tang of plum peel. (MK)

A big, vibrant style, with gutsy tannins and a wealth of dense dark berry fruit, unfolding to offer crushed rock, black licorice, cedar and dried herb notes. Drink now through 2024. (JL)
