K&L Notes

Though the 2014 has yet to be professionally reviewed, the 2013 bottling earned 91 points and accolades from Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "Medium-deep gold-tinged yellow. Enticing aromas of apricot, savory herbs and minerals. Rich, ripe stone fruit and balsamic herb flavors are nicely buoyed by lively acidity. The long finish features resonating mineral lift. This outstanding, archetypal Verdicchio wine speaks clearly of the cooler Matelica terroir." (06/2015)

Here at K&L we will sell about 1000 bottles of Chardonnay for every one of these, and that's a great loss for our customers. This truly great wine is layered, textured, complex and hails from the greatest vineyard for the Verdicchio grape in all of Italy. Apricot, ripe peach and other stone fruit are embedded in a rich glycerin-like middle while fresh acidity and stony mineral hold the finish. Unique and singularly intense!

We couldn't be more pleased to offer the wines of Aldo Cifola whose white wines rank among Italy's finest. Even in a challenging vintage like 2014, his Verdicchio is exceptional. It opens with scents of dried honey, soft citrus fruit and saline, and follows with a round, creamy palate of ripe mineral-driven lemon fruit and a long finish thanks to ample, bright acidity. Cifola harvests later than most other producers (which explains the wine's golden tinted color) yet is able to obtain oenological ripeness while preserving mouthwatering acidity. World-class Verdicchio. Seafood, vegetables, eggs and mild pastas with this one.

High profiled aromas of pear to white peach, with a fig-like to melon-like undertone intermixed with a wet river stone to slate minerality are distinctive and quite unique, all of which leads to an amazingly rich, lush, viscous palate impression. Complex, superb structure, and full-bodied, this Gem may be the best Verdicchio that I have ever tasted. The Bean has demanded that I bring home several cases of this exceptional Gem. In any case, this is one white wine that you should not miss. GREAT VALUE!" [JIM BARR, K&L WINE MERCHANTS' WINE STAFF] ***** 12.5% ABV *****

The 2014 La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matellica, from the top producer in the region, combines a rich texture and ripe, sweet fruit with focused minerality and a fresh, lively character. No oak aging, though extended lees contact adds complexity. I love the precision here, and the more exotic notes of fennel and candied lemon peel. One of the most intriguing Italian whites in our inventory, and a terrific value.

Matelica is my favorite DOC for Verdicchio, the inland Apennine valley full of marine sediments that has a true continental climate and always gives wines with verve, bright burst and...richness. The 2014 Monacesca shows all of the mineral snap but due to its later harvest (starting the first week of October) the grapes achieve total physiological ripeness. That leads to the deeper ripe pear aromatics, more complex fruit on the palate. The amazing thing is that even with the ripeness this wine has great acidity and real aging ability. Yes, aging ability, I’ve had them back to the early 1990s, still vibrant complex and the Riserva’s last even longer. This is a superb wine for the price and one of Italy’s TOP indigenous varieties.
