 Individual judges' scores: Mark Andrew 91 Stephen Brook 93, Andy Howard MW 90. A nose that captures the attention: chiselled, fresh and elegant. Oak is subtle and integrated with a mineral edge and some phenolic grip on the palate. Green citrus and basil notes bring complexity. Understated, yet modern with a pleasant finish.

Hanzell's Estate Chardonnay is the flagship Chardonnay bottling from this venerable, Burgundian varietal specialist in the Sonoma Valley. An innovative winery, Hanzell was the first to create temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters and isolated a malolactic bacteria that is still used today, there and in wineries worldwide. Considered age-worthy and collectible, Hanzell Chardonnay has a record of 60 years of vintages to back it up--since 1957! This wine is a blend of estate-grown Chardonnay from the winery's Ambassador’s 1953 block, Zellerbach, Day, de Brye and Ramos vineyards.

Hanzell is one of those wines you talk about being really special, but if you haven't tasted it recently it's hard to appreciate just how incredible it really is. Ultra dense nose of white and yellow fruit, honeysuckle - floral, but not perfumed. Dense and oaky in the best way, delicious Meyer lemon and the best quality popcorn you could imagine. It's somehow so Californian, but nothing in California is quite like this. A master piece.

The 2013 Hanzell Vineyards Chardonnay is comprised of fruit from older vines on the Hanzell property averaging about 34 years old. This wine has a beautifully expressive nose showing lemon curd, fresh mango, lime zest and brioche notes coming from the lees stirring during the fermentation process. About a fourth of the wine went through malolactic fermentation creating a full, rich texture on the palette but still has that balancing acidity. Drinking fabulously now, this wine also has amazing cellaring potential and can be enjoyed ten or more years from now.
