2015 Bodegas Mas Alta "Artigas" Priorat

SKU #1248350 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

From one of the top estates in the region, the 2015 Artigas is a brilliant Priorat based on 60% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 16 months in in 25% new French oak. It offers a full-bodied, ripe, yet elegant and weightless style as well as perfumed notes of black raspberries, blackberries, cracked black pepper, and earth. It has terrific intensity, yet again, stays elegant and nuanced. It’s going to keep for a decade or more and is a seriously good bottle of wine. (2/2018)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2015 Artigas is a blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from 15-year-old vineyards, with 90% from their estate vineyards on old, decomposed slate soils, and some purchased from La Vilella Alta and Poboleda. They used some full clusters with selected and indigenous yeasts for the fermentation in concrete vats, then aged the wine 16 months in French oak barrels. It's quite fruit-driven, ripe and concentrated, showing the character of the year. The palate is juicy, with abundant, fine tannins and a soft texture. An accessible, textbook 2015. (LG) (4/2018)

90 points James Suckling

Quite a serious and structured wine with very ripe blackberry and cherry notes, but also some freshness. Attractive interplay of fruit and tannin that persists through the long finish. Drink or hold. (8/2018)

A great price point for Priorat this wine showcases the best of what the region has to offer. Ripe, dark fruit dominate, yet don't overwhelm. Fans of this region will definitely find something to like here, as it is a good, emblematic example of the region.

This Priorat, with "un accento francés" (a few famous Rhone valley winemakers produce the wine) is wonderfully expressive in the 2015 vintage, showing the beautiful, heady, exotic fruit of the region, while harnessing the warmth of the vintage to produce something bright and tasty. Intense mixed berry fruits lead to a finish that gains in dimension and freshness, showing minerality and surprising length towards the finish. At under $20 - a tough price point to reach in a region with such scarce production - this is pitch perfect Priorat that won't break the bank.
