2012 Torrin "The Maven" Paso Robles Grenache

SKU #1243538 96 points Jeb Dunnuck

From a more normal year, the 2012 The Maven (91% Grenache and 9% Syrah all from the Torrin Vineyard) reveals a vibrant purple color as well as a rocking bouquet of ripe cherry and black raspberry fruits, loads of earth and loamy soil-like minerality, medium to full body, and an elegant, seamless texture. The tannins are nicely managed, it’s beautifully balanced, and is a terrific example of Grenache from California. (7/2018)

Moving more and more toward a 100% Grenache cuvee (the 2013 is all Grenache), the 2012 The Maven is 91% Grenache and 9% Syrah that was roughly 30% whole clusters. It has a perfumed, floral streak in its sweet, red and black raspberry, cracked pepper, cumin and dried violet bouquet. This gives way to a full-bodied, supple and seamless 2012 that has silky tannin and a solid finish. Drink through 2030. (JD) (8/2015)

Deep, bright ruby. Ripe raspberry, cherry and smoky Indian spices on the highly perfumed nose. Densely packed and alluringly sweet, offering vibrant red berry and cherry liqueur flavors and a hint of candied rose. Gains weight and expands with air, finishing silky, spicy and long, with an intense raspberry note. This is a striking example of New World Grenache, admittedly with Syrah lending a helping hand.
