2013 Zind Humbrecht Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Gewürtraminer Grand Cru Alsace

SKU #1233251 97 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Crazy aromas of gun powder, dried pineapple and mango. Flint stone too. Full-bodied and lightly dry with a wonderful subdued and complex palate. Very long and subtle. Great Gewurz. Inner quote mark (9/2015)

Outer quote mark Zind-Humbrecht's 13.6-acre clos at Rangen is a steep vineyard at a high altitude, where cold air washes over the vines. Gewurztraminer is limited to a 1.2-acre block at the base of the vineyard, less exposed to winds that could impact its flowering. Proximity to the Thur River helps to moderate the climate, and the volcanic soils at the baseof the slope have a slightly higher pH, which Olivier Humbrecht believes improves the performance of the 34-year-old Gewurz vines. In 2013, they produced a bone-dry wine without any of the primary floral aromas the variety can give. Its tension feels like the wine was chiseled out of rock, the concentration providing a glimpse of quince and grapefruit notes and a scent of beeswax, tightly held and buzzing with energy. This is Gewurztraminer as a vehicle for the site and the soil, a great wine not to be missed. Inner quote mark (12/2015)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Yellow-golden in color, the 2013 Gewürztraminer Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos St Urbain (which was picked one day after the Riesling and stopped fermentation with 42 grams of residual sugar at 13.5% alcohol) opens with a flinty/stony, pure, lemon-fresh and highly complex bouquet that reminds me more of a natural perfume with cumin and orange flavors than a wine. Rich and oily, highly elegant, piquant and salty on the palate, this full-bodied, firmly structured though stimulatingly mineral wine is a beautiful rarity: only 0.5 of the 5.5 hectares of the Clos are planted with Gewurz (the lower part with the deeper volcanic soils, with 34-year-old vines on average), and the 2013 combines power and concentration with purity, finesse and a dancing acidity. It is very rare that you can have such a stimulating and complex Gewurz that is extremely difficult to spit even for car driving professionals. This is a Must Buy for both Rangen and Traminer freaks. And shame on you should you drink all you can grasp too early. (SR) Inner quote mark (10/2015)

95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark The subtle, rounded but rather aromatic perfume of peach skins and apricot compote on the nose is utterly seductive—there is a promise of oriental riches and exotic spice but above all pure, glowing peach fruit. The palate is in total focus: while some residual sugar illuminates every last vestige of fruit, there is guiding central force that never lets this slip into the merely opulent. A masterful tightrope walk amidst plump fruit and mineral precision with a finishing, pleasantly bitter edge of marzipan. (RV) Inner quote mark (4/2016)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Rich and vibrant, with flavors of peaches and cream, grapefruit granita, Key lime pie, ground anise and candied ginger, all backed by firm acidity and a smoky, minerally underpinning. Full-bodied and intense, this wine needs food or time in the cellar. Best from 2017 through 2030. Inner quote mark (10/2015)
