Outer quote mark One of the finest blends of its kind, the La Proportion Dorée (Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and a dollop of Muscadelle) reminds me of a California version of the limited production Château Haut-Brion Blanc, even though that wine has less Semillon and no Muscadelle. The 2013 Proprietary White La Proportion Dorée is composed of 67% Semillon, 31% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle from 29-year-old, dry-farmed vineyards. There is only a single cluster per shoot, which results in tiny yields. The wine is barrel-fermented with frequent lees stirring. A killer white, it is full-bodied with notes of caramelized lemon candy, honeysuckle, candle wax, flowers and tropical fruit marmalade. (RP) Inner quote mark (12/2014)

Outer quote mark The 2013 La Proportion Doree, Morlet’s blend of Semillon and Sauvignon, is textured, open-knit and super-expressive today. Lemon confit, white flowers, chamomile, mint, lightly honeyed notes and white orchard fruit are nicely delineated throughout, but it is the wine’s density and textural richness that stand out most. This is a rich, layered white meant for the dinner table, so it needs to be paired with similarly bold foods. A dollop of Muscadelle adds texture on the oily, generous finish. There is a lot to like. Semillon

- A rich, viscous, full-flavored but subtly-scented and botrytis-prone white grape, Sémillon reaches magical heights when infected with "noble rot" and combined with even small amounts of the aromatic and high-acid Sauvignon Blanc to make Sauternes, one of the world's most revered and longest-lived wines, and in the sweet wines of surrounding regions like Barsac. Sémillon's most famous incarnation is in the wines of Château d'Yquem, one of the world's most expensive wines, and one that has been known to evolve for centuries. It frequently dominates, but not by much, in the oak-aged whites of Bordeaux's Graves and Pessac-Léognan, creating honeyed and viscous wines that are unlike any others. Elsewhere in Bordeaux and around France it takes on a supporting role in the wines of Entre-Deux-Mers and the Médoc. While planted throughout France, Europe, California and Washington, Sémillon's role as underling usually keeps it out of the spotlight with a few winery-specific exceptions. However, the grape is allowed to shine in Australia's Hunter Valley, where it is used to make an elegant dry wine often called, perplexingly, Hunter Valley Riesling. It also makes some incredible dry, oaked wines from the Barossa and lovely stickies in the style of Sauternes.

Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
