2013 Chappellet "Signature" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1228223 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature from Chappellet, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a stunner. Moreover, it’s a pretty realistic value for a top-notch Cabernet from California. Of course, it’s a great vintage and they’ve nailed it. Deep ruby/purple color, notes of blueberry, blackberry, with cassis, camphor and spring flowers, the wine is full-bodied, powerful (14.8% natural alcohol), layered with supple tannins and a long, long finish. Outer quote mark The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is bright, focused and nuanced throughout. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries, pomegranate and cinnamon are some of the aromas and flavor that flesh out in the glass. Striking in its aromatics, with pliant, open-knit fruit and fabulous balance, the 2013 offers outstanding quality and even better value. The addition of Malbec and Merlot in the blend softens some of the contours. Polished and refined, the 2013 Signature is one of the best wines readers will find for the money. Outer quote mark Blueberry, licorice and spearmint aromas follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Length and balance. Inner quote mark (1/2016)

93 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark This is Phillip Corallo-Titus’s flagship wine, from vineyards on Pritchard Hill, in the eastern elevations of Napa Valley. The blend includes 12 percent malbec, as well as a little merlot and petit verdot; it presents the Napa Valley’s assets in the restrained style of a claret touched by sweet ripeness. The luscious texture offers up a fragrant tumble of fresh raspberry, floral plum and rose petal spice. It’s sturdy in a gentle way, the tannins mineral and refined. Inner quote mark (10/2016)

93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This lovely wine offers classic elements of cedar and tar built around a medium-bodied weight of soft, complex texture. Smoky oak never detracts from the layering of black licorice and blackberry that builds as it goes, this wine defined most by its substantial length. (VB) Inner quote mark (11/2016)

Big, concentrated, powerful Napa Cabernet without the jammy sweetness that has overwhelmed so many modern-day Napa bottlings. Sure, this is a big wine packed full of black and blue fruits, cassis, blackcurrant, graphite and toasty oak; but it's well structured, not too over-extracted and doesn't need to be on the dessert wine shelf like so many others. Beyond this...when you consider the wine is made up with a good chunk of Pritchard Hill fruit and sells for $54.99...you might think someone left a zero off the price tag when compared to the neighbors Colgin, Bryant...

As they say in real estate, it's all about "location, location, location!" I would give the same advice to wine drinkers who want to get the most for their money. Figure out where the fruit comes from and then do a comparison. Chappellet is on Pritchard Hill in Napa, home to a few other names you might recognize like Colgin, Bryant Family, Continuum, David Arthur and Ovid. So do the math: Colgin sells for between $350 to $600 a pop. Bryant Family, the same deal. A wine can only be as good as the quality of its fruit, and in the case of the 2013 Chappellet, you're talking about serious Pritchard Hill Cabernet from a vintage being heralded as legendary. There are fleshy red flavors and a bit of new oak that should eventually integrate, and the tannic structure is there to provide that potential. You could also just decant it for an hour, cook up a steak, and go to town tonight. From a real estate perspective, you're getting a pretty great deal.

Amazing value! Incredible buy! What else needs to be said? This weekend I poured for our customers a line-up of some of Napa Valley’s top 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, this line-up included Opus One, Insignia, Dominus and Caymus Special Select and I can tell you that for 1/4th the cost of these wines the 2013 Chappellet easily holds its own with this high-end quartet. The stunning 2013 Chappellet “Signature” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers up intoxicating aromas of blackberry, crème de cassis, mocha and spice with seamless palate of dark fruits, black plum, spice and firm tannins. A serious Cabernet that while enjoyable young can easily spend 20+ years in the cellar and re-emerge as a legendary wine if you are able to resist pulling the cork. The 2013 Chappellet “Signature” Cab is in my humble opinion the best wine for under $60 we have on the shelf at K&L currently and should be snatched up before everyone else figures out what a fantastic wine it is for the money and inevitably sells out.
Top Value! Drink from 2015 to 2040
