Mortlach 25 Year Old Gordon & Macphail Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1228099

The magnificent old distillery in Dufftown has garnered quite a following over the years, even without a flagship bottling. So much so that the owners have decided to finally release a distillery bottling. This is not that, which retails for nearly $1000-- it is in fact much more delicious! Old-school rugged Mortlach, from a mixture of refill Hoggies and sherry butts, using the old original distillery label that G&M owns from when they bottled for the previous owners. They're smart so they kept those old trademarks, and now we reap the benefits. A fabulous value by any measure, but this is exactly what old Scotch should taste like! At these close out prices there's not a single scotch lover who should be passing up these insane deals. Once G&M returns to the market you can expect this product to go back up to it's normal $200+ price.

If you've read this far you probably know that Mortlach is the base component for the Johnnie Walker's but what a shame that it is so rare under its own distillery label. From the beginning the Mortlach brings an assortment of new aromas constantly reshuffling and bringing you back for another sip. It is a beautifully long and complex style with toasted barley, honey and caramelized orange peel flavors that expand on the palate. A non-peated, non-sherry dominant style that shows the beauty of the grain and the character of extended aging. Tremendous!

This 25 year old expression is nothing flashy or fancy, but rather is the type of perfectly aged Speyside single malt that harkens back to another era of whiskey consumption, before limited releases were promoted on makeshift rocket ships and the like. It's soft, nicely malty and gently honeyed, with just a whisper of peat smoke on the palate. Sort of a wool army blanket of a Scotch, utilitarian but comforting, reliable, and aging really well. Delicious and worthy of a few extra drams.

Old single malt is becoming rarer and more expensive by the minute, and this Mortlach offers a rare opportunity to enjoy 25 year old whisky without getting into the stratosphere price wise. Unlike many malts this age, it hasn't gone to wood, and still has mid-palate presence as well as nearly endless length. I love the meaty, nearly saucisson sec flavors that subtly dial up the substance of this otherwise subtle, complex dram. If you are looking for a old school, complex malt that you will never tire of, you found it!

The spectacular Mortlach 25 year from Gordon & Macphail reminds us how important the independent bottler. While the distillery's owners release a similar product for nearly 5 times the price, the little grocer in Elgin, who centuries ago was the official bottler for many of the Highland's finest distillers, releases one of the the finest examples of Speyside whisky for what might be considered a nominal price. Owe it to their solid contracts and some serious local street cred, this exquisite little whisky is one of the finest deals in the store.
