2013 Herman Story "White Hawk Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Syrah

SKU #1227676 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Heady aromas of ripe blueberry, dark chocolate, olive and candied flowers, given urgency by a peppery nuance. Densely packed but energetic, offering palate-staining black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that expand with air. Closes with alluring sweetness, a hint of smokiness and velvety tannins that fold slowly into the plush, sappy dark fruit. (JR) Inner quote mark (9/2016)

K&L Notes

Herman Story proprietor/winemaker Russel P. From specializes in small lot productions of Rhône-style wines and though he has earned high praise from critics for his wines over the years, he sure hasn't let ego get in the way of making distinctive wines that reflect a clear sense of place and his unique sense of humor. This one's got 2% Viognier in the mix, and was aged in 65% new French oak for a full two years. Winemaker notes: "You know those pictures of dragons sitting on piles of gold coins and skeletons, a whisp of smoke coming from their noses and for some reason they’re holding a giant chalice of red liquid? This is what I imagine those dragons are drinking: cherry peppers, grilled apricot meat, caramelized red current, sawdust marrow, cherry cordial, garam masala, black and blue filet mignon, vanilla pudding and crème brulee crust."
