Capurro Estate Grown Single Vintage Moscatel Premium Pisco (750ml)

SKU #1220057

Capurro is a 100-year-old, family-owned company with roots in nearby San Mateo. The family operates a Peruvian food and import business on B Street downtown, and they self-distribute their own pisco. It's literally a mom-and-pop operation. This new line of Capurro piscos are all from the 2012 vintage in Peru and have been rested in stainless steel tanks for over three years. There are three single varietal expressions (Moscatel, Torontel, and Quebranta) and one acholado which means a blend of different grapes. They are made entirely from estate-grown fruit, with no additives and no filtration. All of them are outstanding and worth your time. Moscatel is the Spanish word for Muscat, which is an incredibly fruity and aromatic grape varietal. The floral and vibrant qualities are therefore distilled into the spirit, creating an expressive and exotic flavor that adds an incredible versatility and pizzazz to any cocktail bar.

The Moscatel is the driest of the 4 Capurro expressions. It shows off fresh and dried fruits on the nose and upfront on the palate. There are tons of pears and stone fruits. I also find it to have the slight earthy sweetness and vegetal tang of an agave plant. Moscatel is considered by many in Peru to be the best sipping Pisco variety. One sip of this neat and you'll know why. The proof is in the long and lasting finish.

Like some other distillates Pisco seems to have suffered from the fact that until recently only the bottom end stuff has been on the market here in the US and so beyond the occasional Pisco Sour no one has had much to do with it. Fortunately brands like Capurro are coming in now and changing the way some of us think about Pisco. The single vintage Moscatel from this family owned and operated company opens with a beautiful floral nose with hints of citrus blossom. Clean and dry on the palate with a pleasant spice note this spirit also contains notes of red apple and pear. Certainly one of the most interesting and best Pisco's I have tasted this will be fun to play around with especially at this time of the year.

Of the single vintage 2012 Capurro piscos, the Moscatel, an offshoot of the Muscat grape, has the aromatic scent of orange blossoms and honeydew. The mouthfeel displays medium richness and develops into a spicy, dry, smooth finish. Sip alone to enjoy a true farm-to-bottle experience with the unique personality of one of Peru's top varietals! Delicious stuff.
