2013 Williams Selyem "Estate Vineyard" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1218955 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark From the hillsides of Westside Road, a goldmine of goodness, this estate-driven wine is packed with cinnamon, black-cherry clafouti and crushed rose petals. Soft and seductively silky on the palate, it's bright and deceptively light, a symphony of pomegranate, cardamon and blood orange that lingers on the finish. (VB) Inner quote mark (5/2016)

Outer quote mark The 2013 Pinot Noir Williams Selyem Estate has a complex, almost DRC-like forest floor nose with raspberry, black cherry, and floral notes. Full-bodied and ripe, it gets my highest marks as the most profound of the 2013 Pinot Noirs from Williams Selyem. This full-bodied classic should age effortlessly for 15+ years. Outer quote mark One of the highlights in this range, the 2013 Pinot Noir Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard is deep, powerful and authoritative, with serious thrust and energy. Tobacco, leather, dried herbs, licorice and smoke wrap around a core of dark-fleshed fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the 2013 packs a serious punch. It should age effortlessly for a decade-plus. The Estate is by far the most reticent and structured of the Russian River Pinots in this range. (AG) 93+ Inner quote mark (8/2016)

Outer quote mark Complex, featuring a mix of anise, black licorice, sandy earth, smoky oak, blackberry and currant flavors, all running deep and persistent. Long on the finish, with well-integrated tannins. (JL) Inner quote mark (4/2016)

K&L Notes

According to the winery: "The hillsides of Westside Road are special because of their red soils, which seem to impart a mineral elegance; the Williams Selyem Estate typifies this. Pure cherry notes intermix with blood orange, oyster shell and fennel seed, and meld seamlessly with the elegance of the French oak flavors imparted during barrel aging. The very fine acidity highlights a precision that drives the length of the polished tannins. A very textural wine that must be cellared to achieve its full potential. Our Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard is nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley on Westside Road. With an opportunity to plant to our exact specifications, we selected clones of Pommard, Swan, Calera, and Mt. Eden (UCD 37). The vines are positioned northeast to southwest to allow for even exposure to the summer sun."
